Vin Diesel cried over Fast Forever, but its director hasn’t read it

Fast Forever is taking forever but Louis Letterier says fans should hold out hope

Three years after Fast X ended on a cliffhanger, Fast Forever still hasn't entered production. But according to director Louis Leterrier, the long-delayed finale is very much alive — even if he can't fully explain why it's taken so long.

Speaking to Polygon during a press tour for his upcoming Netflix film The Last House, Leterrier confirmed he remains attached to direct the Fast & Furious “finale” despite spending the last three years making other projects instead of immediately rolling into the sequel, as was once planned.

"There is a parallel universe" where he went straight from Fast X into the next film, Leterrier said. "It's like a combination of Fast not going… we were supposed to go straight into it, then the strike, me finding this script [for The Last House].”

Remember Fast X?

The comments offer one of the clearest acknowledgments from someone directly involved with the franchise that Fast Forever's development stalled after Fast X's 2023 release. Earlier this year, Vin Diesel announced a March 2028 release date… with very few other details. Specifically, who was directing it.

Asked directly whether he's still making Fast Forever, Leterrier didn't hesitate.

"Not currently because I'm finishing another movie, but yeah," he said. "This franchise will have an ending. They built a ride!" he joked. "They have to finish it. Someone has to end it."

One answer, however, hinted that there's considerably more happening behind the scenes than the public has been led to believe.

Last week, Diesel told fans on Instagram that reading the latest Fast Forever screenplay had him in tears. “I just read the Fast Forever script by Mike Leslie. It is the best script I have read in decades,” Diesel said. “I am still crying…”

But when Polygon asked Leterrier whether he'd read that same script, the director revealed he hasn't — and suggested there's a story he isn't free to tell.

"Well, uh, I'd love to tell you the full truth, but I can't," Leterrier said with a laugh. "There will be an ending, and it's great. I was very, very lucky to be part of the franchise, and I love Vin and I love Universal. They're great to work with. So yeah. We'll see, hopefully."

WIll we ever see Fast Forever, a production that seems to exist more through Diesel's enthusiastic social media posts than through concrete production updates? Leterrier's comments at least affirm: yes we will. Probably? The finale is still the plan, and he's still expecting to be the one behind the camera when it finally happens.
