What Avantika Wanted to See in Not Suitable for Work Season 2

Gigi Hadid Makes Her Onscreen Acting Debut in Mindy Kaling's ‘Not Suitable for Work’

Avantika Vandanapu was ready to make a home in Murray Hill.

Though Hulu canceled Not Suitable for Work following its first season, the cast had big plans for their characters. And for Avantika, that included showing audiences a different side of her character Abby Chilukuri.

"In season one, we saw her as this ambitious career girl," she exclusively told E! News at the Diwali Celebration at Maxwell Social on Oct. 13. "I was excited to see her juggle that more with her personal life in season two because I think, whether you want to or not, it's really easy to get sucked into the New York dating scene."

Abby was no stranger to budding romances. In fact, the aspiring fashion stylist's connection with actor Austin Blanchett (Harry Richardson) bloomed after she poached him as a client from her former boss Vanessa Hsu (Constance Wu). Unfortunately, the heat fizzled out and Austin ultimately dropped her as a stylist, too.

As the Hulu series proved with Abby—not to mention BFF AJ Pascarelli (Ella Hunt) and her entanglements with her boss Bill Gibson (Jay Ellis) and later, co-worker Davis Barrett (Will Agnus)—mixing work and pleasure isn't always a good idea.

Avantika was looking forward to seeing where Abby's life would go after returning to work for Vanessa.

"It's really interesting managing that with an ambitious lifestyle and an ambitious spirit," the 21-year-old reflected. "That was going to be a fun lens and fun perspective to dive into, especially considering she's Desi."

"We are all raised to be these independent go-getters," she continued, "but we all also want love. I was excited to see that."

Although the American Horror Story actress had to bid Abby farewell for now, she's living her own ambitious life in New York City, which always kicks off the Diwali season with some sparkles.

"It feels like a little tradition to start the Diwali season off with a party where I can celebrate with my friends," the actress—who hosted the soirée alongside Percy Jackson and the Olympians' Aryan Simhadri and influencer Aditya Madiraju—explained. "I love bringing my friends from all different cultures to this party and introducing them to light and what it means to be in the spirit of Diwali."

After all, the South Asian holiday—which falls on Nov. 8 this year—carries a golden message for everyone who celebrates.

"While it is light over dark, good over evil," Avantika added, "it's also a spirit of gratitude that you carry through these months, because you're constantly invited to people's homes for dinners and constantly invited to spend time with your friends and celebrate and be surrounded by good food, good music and good culture."
