Why Dakota Johnson Is Fiercely Protective of Her Private World

Dakota Johnson Cheekily Calls Musicians “Tricky Motherf--kers" After Role Model Romance

When it comes to details of Dakota Johnson’s personal life, there are many shades of gray.

And that’s exactly how she intends to keep it.

“I am obsessed with people not knowing where I am or what I’m doing,” the Fifty Shades of Grey star told Vogue in a recent cover story. "I'm far too porous and sensitive and present. I don’t—I can’t deal."

Yet, having a career in the spotlight often forces her to deal with public interest around her private world. So, Johnson tries to handle it on her own terms—occasionally messing with the press because, as she put it, “the other side is f--king with me.”

Still, the Verity actress knows she can’t control the headlines—including those about who she is or isn’t dating. Recently, Johnson has been spotted hanging out with musician Machine Gun Kelly. She was previously linked to singer Role Model following the end of her eight-year relationship with Coldplay’s Chris Martin last year.

But don’t expect the Madame Web alum to untangle her relationship status. As Johnson politely told Vogue, "I don’t want to say anything about that."

All she’ll say is that, when it comes to musicians, "They like me. I don’t know what to say. And I like them." However, there are some aspects Johnson doesn’t love.

“A lot! A lot,” she said with a laugh. "Tricky mother--kers."

While Johnson doesn’t divulge much about her romances, she has opened up about other parts of her personal life, including her desire to have kids one day.

"I really do," the 36-year-old told the magazine. "I didn’t expect to be this age and at this place in my life, but for whatever reason, that’s the plan of the universe. So I would love that. I hope that that happens for me. I’ve always felt, especially the last few years, that there is a soul that wants to come through. And I hope that I’m lucky enough to be able to do that."

Navigating life in the limelight is something Johnson has done since her own childhood days—as she grew up in a blended family that included her actor dad Don Johnson as well as her Oscar-nominated mom Melanie Griffith and stepdad Antonio Banderas, plus six siblings.

"When I was little, there were times when it was really quite frightening, and people would aggressively and physically try to get to my mom when we were just going to the supermarket or something," the Suspiria star recalled to Vogue Germany in 2025. "If you accept that as normal as a young child, it can lead to a lot of insecurities."

"Then, of course," she continued, "there's the fact that you're in the public eye, and the world knows about your private life in a way that's very invasive, outrageous, and painful. So yes, there are downsides, but there are also incredible advantages—like with everything, I think."

It’s not that Johnson is complaining about being famous. It’s just that she doesn’t appreciate it when boundaries get crossed.

"There’s a set time and place to be photographed for what I do. That’s part of my job," she acknowledged to Bustle in 2024. "But to be photographed when I don’t know I’m being photographed and it’s a private moment? That feels like the most invasive, violating, horrible thing. People say that’s the price you pay when you’re famous, but I don’t believe that’s necessarily true."

Comparing the paparazzi to "invisible germs," as Johnson called them in a 2021 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she does her best to avoid them.

"Luckily, I figured out ways to evade them, and I’m not giving away my secrets," she continued. “But truly it takes a lot to have a private life."

Another way Johnson protects hers is by staying off social media.

"I abstain from it and I don't feel the need to explain to the world who I am to anyone," The Social Network alum told a reporter in 2017, per the U.K. outlet Female First. "If there's some sort of perception of me, then so be it. I am still figuring it out and I have found power in knowing that I don't need anybody to truly understand me. That is the last privacy I have really.”

In perhaps one of her most infamous TV moments, Dakota Johnson called out Ellen DeGeneres for not attending her 30th birthday party.

After the comedian joked on a 2019 episode of her eponymous talk show that she "wasn't invited," Dakota dryly retorted, "Actually, no—that's not the truth, Ellen."

The actress proceeded to point out that Ellen gave her "a bunch of s--t" the last time she was on the show about not being invited, so Dakota made sure she was included on the guest list this time around.

"I didn't even know you liked me," Dakota told Ellen. "I did invite you, but you didn't come."

Viral Fame

When asked about the viral Ellen interview four years later, Dakota simply told L'Officiel, "It will haunt me."

Fifty Shades of Candid

Dakota got very candid about her experience filming the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise years after its final movie, revealing that author E.L. James "had a lot of creative control" and "demanded that certain things happen."

"There were parts of the books that just wouldn't work in a movie, like the inner monologue, which was at times incredibly cheesy," she told Vanity Fair in 2022, explaining how the writer often clashed with the studio and the director. "It was like mayhem all the time."

In fact, Dakota believes no one would've signed onto the project if they "had known at the time that's what it was going to be like."

As she noted, "It would've been like, 'Oh, this is psychotic.'"

E.L. has not publicly responded to Dakota's comments.

Lime Lie

Who knew an innocent comment about limes would go viral? But that was what happened to Dakota after her 2020 house tour with Architectural Digest, during which she pointed to a bowl of limes in her kitchen and raved, "I love limes. I love them so much. They're great, and I like to present them like this in my house."

However, Dakota later admitted that it was all "set dressing."

"I'm actually allergic to limes," she confessed during a 2021 appearance on The Tonight Show. "So, I lied."

Caught in a Web of Memes

When the first trailer of Madame Web dropped in November 2023, the internet became fascinated with Dakota's monotonous delivery of the line: "He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders right before she died."

Though the phrase quickly became a meme across the web, it failed to ensnare Dakota's attention—subsequently leading to another meme-able moment when she later expressed her confusion over its popularity.

"Why did that go viral?" she stoically asked an interviewer who mentioned the meme. "I have no idea what that's about."

Dakota added of her viral line, "That seems like a basic storyline to me."

Dakota—who is the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson—didn't hold back her thoughts on Hollywood's nepo baby debate, when she told Today in a February 2024 interview, "When that first started, I found it to be incredibly annoying and boring."

A Hairy Confession

While speaking to Andrew Garfield about how they often cross paths at Hollywood events, Dakota admitted to taking out her hair extensions and giving them to fellow partygoers.

"At those parties, I’d probably get a little drunk and then just take them out," she shared in a Vanity Fair sit-down, "and put them in men’s jacket pockets because they’re so annoying and I’d just find a place to put them."

Sleep On It

Above all else, Dakota (understandably) puts sleep as "my number one priority in life."

"I'm not functional if I get less than 10," she told WSJ. Magazine in December 2023. "I can easily go 14 hours."

However, Dakota later clarified she doesn't always snooze for that long.

"I said that I could easily sleep 14 hours, but I don't demand it," she said on The Tonight Show in 2024. "I'm not a monster. I have a job."

But really, Dakota doesn't know why the internet cares about how long she rests.

"Why is sleep bad?" she asked. "Why? Leave me alone."
