'More shall be revealed, but a lot of people were disappointed'

Marvel Studios' six-year experiment in streaming television seems to be winding down, at least for the moment. This has been clear for a while now (despite some vague promises of more new series in the future), but perhaps the biggest sign that the Marvel Cinematic Universe was retreating from live-action TV was the sudden cancellation of Wonder Man.

Created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, the series starred Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, an actor trying to make it in Hollywood while hiding his secret superpowers. Ben Kingsley also reprised his MCU role of Trevor Slattery, who becomes Simon's unlikely mentor. Wonder Man was a hit with both critics and fans.

After quietly landing on Disney Plus in January 2026, it was renewed two months later in March. Then, in July, the series was suddenly canceled.

The news came as a surprise to everyone involved, including the show's most unexpected star, The Sopranos actor Joe Pantoliano, who played an exaggerated version of himself on Wonder Man. Polygon recently interviewed "Joey Pants" about his role in the upcoming movie Violent Night 2, and we wanted to ask how he felt about Wonder Man's cancellation.

Like everyone else, he was shocked by the news.

"Talk about heart, I thought that show was wonderful," Pantoliano tells Polygon. "And then, you know, Destin and his Spider-Man movie is like the hit of the year, then it falls apart. I think there's something going on there that nobody ever — more shall be revealed, but a lot of people were disappointed."

That last sentence is particularly interesting. What is Pantoliano trying to say? Does he know something we don't? Unfortunately, we didn't have time to ask a follow-up question, but we do have a few more details from Wonder Man himself.

Why was Wonder Man canceled?

In a series of interviews last August, Abdul-Mateen reflected on Wonder Man's cancellation and offered a few more details about his experience. Speaking to Vanity Fair, the actor said that Disney offered a vague explanation related to streaming numbers for season 1, but didn't provide any actual numbers.

"I was told that it had something to do with the viewership," he said. "I wasn’t told what those numbers were, but ultimately, I think they decided that it didn’t make sense for business."

Speaking to NPR, he was even more critical, pointing to Marvel's history of failing its Black stars.

"When you look at the history of those projects and when you put them all together, there's no way around it," Abdul-Mateen. "It does not look good. It does not look like good business. And it looks like it's certainly not favorable to its Black creatives."

For now, we still don't know why Disney renewed and then canceled Wonder Man. Could the character eventually show up in a Marvel movie instead? Was the show just a victim of Marvel's retreat from streaming? Or is Abdul-Mateen right that Black creatives aren't getting a fair shake in the MCU? If Pantoliano is correct, we may still find out.

Wonder Man is streaming on Disney Plus.
