Woody Harrelson To Play Wealthy American Expat In Freefall In Rick Alverson’s ‘Summer Of Roses’

EXCLUSIVE: Three-time Oscar nominee Woody Harrelson is set to lead Summer of Roses, a new suspense drama from Rick Alverson, who directs from a script co-written with Micah Jayne.

Caleb Landry Jones, Harrelson’s co-star in Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is also set, as are Hannah Gross (The Drama) and Kaya Wilkins (aka musician Okay Kaya).

Shooting in Sicily next month, Summer of Roses follows Thomas (Harrelson), a wealthy American expatriate in an intoxicated free-fall.

The film is produced by Benjamin Loeb and Magnus Castracane of Small Problems, Tyler Davidson and Drew Sykes of Low Spark Films, and Marco Alessi and Massimiliano Navarra of Dugong Films, together with Nick Grau, John Gray, and Derrick Tseng. Alverson’s Made Bed and Harrelson and Ilya Bronchtein’s Children at Play exec produce. Katie Sanders is co-producer. Low Spark Films is financing, in association with Gray’s It’s Not Pork and new-land.

On September 23, Harrelson will be seen starring opposite Matthew McConaughey in Brothers, an Apple TV comedy where the real-life friends play fictionalized versions of themselves as they learn they might be brothers. Also coming up for release is Quentin Dupieux’s Full Phil with Kristen Stewart. Most recently wrapping a lead role opposite Sam Rockwell in The Cackling of the Dodos, a Netflix crime flick helmed by Jason Bateman, he is represented by 7 Deuce Entertainment and Ziffren Brittenham.

Alverson is an American filmmaker whose last film The Mountain, a drama starring Jeff Goldblum, premiered in competition at the Venice Film Festival. His previous films include Entertainment, starring Gregg Turkington, Tye Sheridan, and John C. Reilly, and Tim Heidecker starrer The Comedy, both of which premiered at Sundance. In addition to his narrative work, he has directed music videos for Oneohtrix Point Never, Sharon Van Etten, Bonny Prince Billy, and Angel Olson, among others. He is repped by WME.
