X-Men comics debut new name for Gambit
The name may not sound very apt for Remy's powers, which allow him to generate and manipulate kinetic energy. He mostly manifests this through his signature playing cards and staff. So what's with the draconic codename? In Gail Simone's Uncanny X-Men #1, Gambit stole The Left Eye of Agamotto from the dragon Sadurang. The dragon warned Gambit that this would come with a price. It was then revealed to Gambit in Uncanny X-Men #14 that he would eventually succumb to madness and become a cannibal as he transformed into a monster. Sure, it came with some cool new powers, but the cons seemed pretty big as well.
That brings us to issue #32. During the alien attack, Gambit undergoes a transformation. At first, draconic wings and a tail burst from his skin. Later, we see he has transformed even further, now taking on the appearance of a dragon almost entirely. While he still speaks, he is clearly in a frenzied, monstrous state. Thus, the codename Wyvern.
With the alien threat vanquished by the issue's end, Rogue decides that she and Remy must part ways with their group of youngsters to find help. It is Remy who says they need to find an exorcist. This sets up the introduction of Repent, a new character Marvel has been teasing. Promotional material for Repent has also dubbed him the X-orcist. Clever.
It is currently unclear whether Repent is a friend or foe, or a mutant for that matter. Artwork depicts the character wielding light constructs, which feed into his religious imagery and the title of The Harbinger of Demons. And you thought Remy was getting too many names. Repent will become Remy's saving grace, with official solicitations teasing the character's mission to "free an X-Man from what he believes is a homicidal possession." With a plan in place to rid Remy of his draconic curse, it seems the codename Wyvern may not be around for long.
Gambit will make another big-screen appearance later this year in Avengers: Doomsday, with Channing Tatum reprising his dream role from Deadpool & Wolverine. It's highly unlikely that the Doomsday version of Gambit will go through such dramatic changes, since the X-Man is just getting started in the MCU.
