10 Best K-Drama Performances By K-Pop Idols
K-dramas starring idols are far from a novel concept, but viewers' standards are higher than ever. In the past decade, Korean film & television, music, and culture at large have been embraced on a global scale, making everything from BTS to Buldak ramen more popular than ever. Yet, there is a divisive ongoing trend wherein top K-pop artists pivot their careers to take on major acting roles.
K-pop stars attempting to pull off leading roles can very easily feel like awkward stunt casting, effectively ruining an otherwise promising story. On the other side of the spectrum, however, there are immensely talented performers who use TV roles to showcase their unseen range. In fact, numerous K-dramas lauded as masterpieces have musical icons in their main cast, proving that the best of the best are truly triple threats.
10 Lee Hye-ri - Reply 1988
Lee Hye-ri got her start as the maknae (youngest member) of Girl's Day, a pop group formed in 2010. A few years later, Lee made her acting debut in a slice-of-life family drama, which helped launch her to national celebrity. Yet, her true breakthrough role came in 2015, when the budding actress landed the leading role of Sung Deok-sun in Reply 1988.
A defining coming-of-age K-drama and the final installment of the acclaimed Reply anthology, Reply 1988 helped legitimize Lee's acting career and showed she could handle major roles with emotional depth, like Deok-sun. Over a decade later, Reply 1988 remains a fan-favorite series largely due to Lee's endearing portrayal of the adolescent protagonist, and Deok-sun is arguably the star's most memorable role to date.
9 Park Hyung-sik - Strong Girl Bong-soon
After tirelessly training for years as a prospective K-pop idol, Park Hyung-sik debuted in 2010 as a member of ZE:A. The same year, he began appearing on television series in one-off cameo roles, though he soon began pursuing acting in earnest, taking part in numerous theater productions, musicals, and supporting on-screen roles. As such, Park was already a somewhat familiar face by the time Strong Girl Bong-soon premiered in 2017.
Nevertheless, the rom-com K-drama marked Park Hyung-sik's first leading role in a major series, and— to make matters more challenging— he was acting opposite Park Bo-young, an established industry darling. Luckily, Park Hyung-sik held his own as quirky CEO Ahn Min-hyuk, and his chemistry with Park Bo-young's titular Do Bong-soon helped create one of the best K-drama couples of all time.
8 Rowoon - The King’s Affection
Long before he'd been announced as a member of SF9, the world met Rowoon as a K-pop trainee in 2013 on the reality series Cheongdam-dong 111. Shortly thereafter, the hopeful competed on and eventually won survival show d.o.b, securing his spot as one of the eponymous nine idols in SF9. The following year, however, Rowoon had already begun taking on acting projects.
The King's Affection was the first K-drama to win an International Emmy Award.
Without a doubt, 2019's Extraordinary You completely changed the trajectory of Rowoon's career, ensuring every casting director had him on their radar. Though he has continually proven his aptitude and dedication to the craft, the actor's best performance is irrefutably in the secret identity K-drama The King's Affection. As Jung Ji-woon, Rowoon gave an exceptionally grounded performance, approaching his character with the depth and detail required for such a convoluted plot. Half a decade later, The King's Affection remains a must-watch for any fan of historical hijinks, slow-burn romance, or Rowoon himself.
7 Bae Suzy - Anna
Though she was eliminated after auditioning for talent scouting competition show Superstar K in 2009, Bae Suzy's obvious dedication piqued the interest of one of the nation's leading record labels (JYP Entertainment), resulting in her debuting in 2010 as one of four members of Miss A. Nevertheless, the young idol had bigger dreams, and she began studying performing arts in high school.
Alongside numerous other musical artists, Bae Suzy made her acting debut in the 2011 teen drama Dream High. Over the subsequent 15 years, Suzy has risen to superstardom as both an idol and actress, appearing in over a dozen successful K-dramas and movies. While her acting is a point of contention for many fans, her performance in Anna was nothing short of chilling. Unquestionably, Bae Suzy broke free of her nonchalant typecast as Lee Yumi and made the 2022 psychological thriller a gripping K-drama that deserves more attention.
6 Cha Eun-woo - The WONDERfools
Image via NetflixCha Eun-woo is a fascinating case where he began as a rookie actor, only to be scouted for an idol trainee program. A few years later, Cha Eun-woo debuted in Astro, and his music career quickly became far more popular than any roles he pursued. Though the performer continually appeared in web series and small roles, he undeniably became known as a K-pop idol thanks to Astro's ever-growing popularity.
Of course, Cha Eun-woo never abandoned his acting dreams, portraying the male lead in series like Gangnam Beauty, Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung, and True Beauty. Unfortunately, his early lead roles were panned by critics, pushing him to largely pivot away from rom-coms. Though naysayers were wary of whether he would fit in with the star-studded cast of The WONDERfools, Cha Eun-woo was superb as Lee Un-jeong, and his synergy with co-star Park Eun-bin (Eun Chae-ni) made the acclaimed superhero story a history-making K-drama.
5 Seo In-guk - Death’s Game
The same year Bae Suzy failed to land a spot on Superstar K, Seo In-guk won the entire season, kick-starting his solo music career. Shortly after making his acting debut in 2012, Seo In-guk was cast as the male lead in Reply 1997, which became one of the highest-rated titles in Korean television history and the first entry in the universally adored trilogy.
From there, Seo In-guk slowly but steadily became one of the best actors of his generation, earning bona fide heartthrob status thanks to shows like the aforementioned Reply 1997, Doom at Your Service, and even 2026's Boyfriend on Demand. The true test for any good actor, though, is stepping outside your comfort zone, which Seo In-guk did in the must-watch horror K-drama Death's Game. The performer captured an impressive sense of realism despite the supernatural setting, imbuing the terrifying narrative with some much-needed relatability.
4 Lee Jun-ho - The Red Sleeve
Similar to Cha Eun-woo, Lee Jun-ho originally had his sights set on acting, only for his life to change overnight once he won Superstar Survival in 2006. After two years of physically, mentally, and emotionally demanding training, Lee Jun-ho debuted in 2008 as a member of 2PM, a band that has still yet to be formally disbanded. Furthermore, Lee began his flourishing solo career in 2013, and he continues releasing new music and touring to this day.
Thankfully, Lee Jun-ho eventually had the opportunity to pursue his lifelong goal of acting, and he soon became a fan-favorite male lead. Though he has portrayed a wide variety of roles ranging from an arrogant chaebol heir (King the Land) to a humble superhero (Cashero), Lee Jun-ho's best work thus far is in The Red Sleeve. The 2021 period piece is a tragic K-drama inspired by the life of King Jeongjo, and Lee Jun-ho perfectly toed the line between fearsome ruler and sympathetic protagonist.
3 Kim Se-jeong - Business Proposal
Kim Se-jeong participated in two survival shows (K-Pop Star 2 and Produce 101) before debuting in the short-lived I.O.I and moving on to girl group Gugudan. Though she explored acting fairly early on in School 2017, the bulk of Kim's career in the past ten years has been as a solo artist. Ironically, the idol appeared on many K-drama soundtracks before she was recognized as an actor.
Nonetheless, Kim Se-jeong was a pivotal figure who helped make Business Proposal one of the best romance K-dramas on Netflix. The 2022 romantic comedy is still recognized as a massively influential series that helped propagate the genre's growing acclaim, and Kim Se-jeong's lovable Shin Ha-ri is undoubtedly part of the well-deserved hype.
2 Yim Si-wan - Squid Game
Image via NetflixAlongside Park Hyung-sik, Yim Si-wan debuted with ZE:A in 2010. The idol began acting in 2012, but his main claim to on-screen fame came in the late 2010s and early 2020s. From psychological thriller Hell Is Other People to sports drama Run On to romantic slice-of-life Summer Strike, Yim Si-wan proved his acting chops with a true winning streak.
Yet, the actor-singer's career changed forever in 2024, when he joined the cast of Squid Game as Lee Myung-gi (Player 333). Throughout seasons 2 and 3, Myung-gi grew to be one of Squid Game's most important characters. Anyone could have faded into the background of such a talented ensemble, but Yim Si-wan stood out as a deeply disturbing antagonist for the ages.
1 IU - When Life Gives You Tangerines
Without question, IU is the definition of an iconic idol-turned-actor. At just 14, IU became a trainee, releasing her first EP the following year. The solo artist was instantly launched into mainstream popularity, which only grew thanks to her involvement in Dream High (2011).
Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo may have been her true breakout role in 2016, but what solidified IU's thriving acting career was 2018's My Mister, a deeply emotional thriller. Frankly, everything IU touches turns to gold, but When Life Gives You Tangerines is genuinely on another level. The poetic romance is one of the best K-dramas of the decade, and IU seamlessly oscillates between two distinct characters with expert precision. Even as countless pop stars transition into K-drama acting year after year, IU will always be the blueprint— and the epitome of a wildly talented triple threat.
