10 Near-Perfect Anime Thrillers That Will Keep Fans Hooked From Start To Finish
The thriller genre is extremely popular across different mediums and it’s easy to see why. The stories are designed to keep viewers on edge throughout, and they employ various techniques in doing so. From high-stakes physical confrontations to intricate psychological warfare, the shows under this umbrella do all they can to create that feeling of suspense and intrigue.
Btooom!
Btooom! is set on a deserted island where participants are seemingly transported into the titular game’s deadly battle royale. In keeping with the name of the game, each player is fitted with a limited number of specialized bombs as their main form of combat. Furthermore, the only way to escape is by defeating other players and acquiring their IC Chips.
This setup paves the way for a thrilling and heavily strategical free-for-all where players must constantly outwit their opponents or meet an untimely end. Besides the action, there is a lot of variation regarding the characters. They are each driven by their own values and motivations, which provides an added layer of entertainment to the story.
Super Crooks
Super Crooks is a show about a group of super-powered criminals teaming up to pull off their biggest heist yet. They are gathered and led by the protagonist, Johnny Bolt. He is spurred to act for the sake of his mentor, who is deeply indebted to a dangerous supervillain called the Salamander.
Since the existence of superpowered criminals naturally implies the presence of superpowered heroes, the crew heads to a location with low superhero activity, specifically Spain. It is still no easy task, though, as they plan to rob the world's most successful supervillain, and even the slightest slip-up can have terrifying consequences.
The Summer Hikaru Died
The Summer Hikaru Died is a chilling psychological anime that manages to balance supernatural horror with unsettling yet very relevant messages regarding adolescent intimacy. The story follows two friends who live in a small rural town, one of whom goes missing for a week and returns not quite the same as the boy who left.
Following his return, the whole town begins to undergo eerie changes as well, as unexplainable events occur one after the other. This sinister atmosphere is further enhanced by compelling visuals that really bring the horror elements to life. The anime is packed with suspense, ghastly mysteries, and an inescapable sense of dread.
Babylon
At the heart of Babylon is Zen Seizaki, a public prosecutor who starts the series simply investigating a shady pharmaceutical company. Discoveries made through this investigation, however, lead Zen and his team down a much darker rabbit hole that threatens to upend the fabric of society as they know it.
For new viewers, the less said about this anime, the better. It becomes a much more valuable experience if you go into it blind. That being said, there is a lot of polarizing discourse surrounding the show's overall message. Still, it is hard to deny its sheer quality as an enthralling psychological thriller.
Higurashi: When They Cry
If you’re not familiar with seeing cutesy characters involved with disturbing violence and mental torture, Higurashi: When They Cry is as good an introduction as any. It is set in the fictional village of Hinamizawa and follows the daily lives of the protagonist, Maebara Keiichi, and his friends from the local school.
Unfortunately for Keiichi, his peaceful daily life soon descends into complete chaos involving torture, murder, and countless other examples of maniacal violence. The village is haunted by a supernatural conspiracy, plunging the cast into an endless cycle of tragedies. Despite it all, a larger mystery remains, and only by uncovering the truth can they be saved.
Lazarus
Released in 2025, Lazarus is the most recent project heralded by the legendary Shinichiro Watanabe. It is set in a world where the drug Hapuna has seemingly alleviated all human suffering, while the doctor responsible disappeared soon after its creation. The peace is shattered three years later when the creator resurfaces and announces that all its users will die soon.
In response to this revelation, five specialized agents are assembled to track down the renegade doctor and force him to develop a cure within thirty days. Produced by MAPPA, the anime features further iconic staff, including Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick movies, who served as the show's action supervisor.
Odd Taxi
Odd Taxi is an anime original featuring anthropomorphic animals and centered on an unassuming Walrus protagonist named Odokawa. It follows his life as a taxi driver as he interacts with a bunch of unique passengers while on the job. This mundane routine somehow evolves to the point where he finds himself intertwined with dangerous criminal groups and law enforcement.
The show’s strengths lie in its engaging dialogue, meticulously crafted plot, and its deceptively complex lead character. At a glance, it doesn’t promise a lot due to its innocuous character designs and its initial easygoing vibe. However, the tension is gradually building, and it leads up to a gripping mystery with clues littered all along the way.
ID: Invaded
ID: Invaded takes a unique approach to crime fiction, while also focusing mainly on serial killers. It features cognitive spaces known as “ID Wells”, which the protagonist, Akihito Narihisago, must investigate to track down his suspects. He is aided by the Mizuhanome system, a machine that develops unique wells for each killer based on their intent to kill.
Within the wells, Narihisago dons an entirely new persona and becomes the Brilliant Detective Sakaido. In this form, he has no memory of his original life, allowing him to devote himself solely to the mystery. He must piece together fragmented clues to track down the elusive John Walker, the main antagonist responsible for the creation of serial killers.
Heavenly Delusion
Heavenly Delusion employs a dual narrative. One is set in a high-tech, isolated facility called Heaven. The other follows the series’ two main protagonists, Maru and Kiruko, as they traverse a decimated Japan ravaged by grotesque creatures called Man-Eaters. Kiruko acts as Maru’s bodyguard, and the main objective of their journey is to locate Heaven.
Kiruko is skilled in various forms of survival, while Maru possesses a unique ability to kill Man-Eaters with a single touch. They are threatened as much by the deadly Man-Eaters as they are by their fellow survivors. The series encourages the audience to decipher clues connecting Heaven and the outside world, while telling profound and exciting stories at every turn.
Another
Set in the spring of 1998, Another follows Koichi Sakakibara as he transfers into an eerie class with deadly secrets. Shortly after, he notices the entire class has completely ostracized a fellow student named Mei Misaki. Unaware of the class’s peculiar situation, Koichi instead chooses to acknowledge her, a decision that bodes horrifying consequences for every one of them.
It does not take long for those within the class and others related to them to begin suffering from gruesome accidents. These events occur entirely at random, creating a suffocating atmosphere of death and paranoia that fully envelopes the students. Eventually, they realize they must work together to stop the calamity before it claims even more lives.
