There may not be a more iconic or beloved character from the original HBO Game of Thrones series than the legendary Ned Stark. Sean Bean's performance as the Stark family paterfamilias is one for the record books, and though the character only lasted one season, his tragic death was arguably the domino that sent the series' already-simmering conflicts spiraling into all-out war.

Ned packed more unforgettable moments into a single season than most characters managed across the entire series. His discovery of the truth behind Joffrey's parentage remains one of Game of Thrones' defining revelations, while his confrontations with Jaime Lannister and Cersei showcased the rigid sense of honor that ultimately doomed him. Moments such as executing the Night's Watch deserter were brutal yet necessary and helped set the tone of the entire show.

While it's been 15 years since we last saw Ned Stark on screen, the Stark patriarch officially returns in a brand-new Game of Thrones release on September 23, 2026 (via GoTL).

Ned Stark officially returns alongside two other icons thanks to a brand-new update for Game of Thrones: Legends this coming September. The update introduces three new Legendary Champions to the game, including Brienne of Tarth on August 26, Lyanna Mormont on September 9, and the Lord of Winterfell himself, Ned Stark, on September 23.

Each Champion brings a different role to Stark-focused teams, with Brienne being built around spreading Freeze across enemy formations, striking a target and nearby foes while becoming increasingly dangerous as her allies inflict more Freeze. Lyanna, on the other hand, rewards carefully ordered attacks that can chain one assault into another, while helping her allies resist disruptive effects such as Silence, Restrain, and Misdirection. Her abilities can also ensure that a Stark leader is prepared to immediately counter an enemy attack.

Ned rounds out the trio as a protective support Champion, absorbing burdens from his allies, restoring teammates, and delivering his own punishing attacks. Zynga is particularly emphasizing the synergy between all three characters: Brienne provides offensive pressure, Lyanna keeps the team's momentum going and counters enemy control, while Ned protects and inspires the group. Together, they're designed to give Stark teams a significant new lineup built around the North's familiar strength-in-numbers philosophy.

If you've never had a chance to play Zynga's Game of Thrones: Legends, it's a match 3-style RPG for mobile that's free to play and comes highly recommended on the App Store and Google Play, with thousands of positive reviews and downloads. It's well worth checking out if you're a fan of the franchise, and it receives regular updates every month with tie-ins from across the entire Game of Thrones franchise, including A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon.
