Throw in the biggest movie star on the planet turning down that megawatt smile and using that infinite charisma to turn into an ice-cold and calculating assassin, and you've got something you probably never thought you'd see. And now, for those people out there who have somehow been sleeping on it, or who have an aversion to films about people that employ public transport, it's available to watch for free.

Collateral is streaming for free on Pluto this month, bringing Mann’s Oscar-nominated crime thriller back to viewers who like their gun shots really loud. The film follows Max, a cab driver whose night is going just fine until it takes a terrifying turn when he picks up Vincent, a contract killer forcing him to drive from target to target across Los Angeles. Hate when that happens, truly.

The cast includes Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible) as Vincent, Jamie Foxx (Ray) as Max Durocher, Jada Pinkett Smith (Girls Trip) as Annie Farrell, Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight) as Detective Fanning, Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights) as Richard Weidner, Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) as Felix Reyes-Torrena, Bruce McGill (Lincoln) as Frank Pedrosa, and Jason Statham (The Transporter) as Frank Martin.

Was 'Collateral' a Success?

Collateral was a huge success, and one of Mann's biggest commercial hits, particularly considering this wasn't a franchise movie or an existing property. It opened with $24.7 million domestically and went on to gross $101 million domestic and $220.2 million worldwide against a reported $65 million budget. That’s not blockbuster-monster money, but making more than three times its production cost worldwide is a very healthy result.

Critics were very taken with it too. Rotten Tomatoes has it at 86%, with praise going to Mann's use of digital cameras, ear-pounding sound, and direction, and Cruise's startling, against-type villainous turn as Vincent. Metacritic lists it at 71, meaning generally favorable reviews. It also earned two Oscar nominations, including Best Supporting Actor for Foxx and Best Film Editing.
