The nerd-centered sitcom The Big Bang Theory quickly became one of the most discussed comedy shows in recent years, making household names out of its main stars and making nerd culture mainstream. This may have been a double-edged sword, with some viewers feeling that the show laughed at them rather than with them. That said, it cannot be denied that The Big Bang Theory had a major impact on STEM, attracting much-needed attention to the sciences through its esteemed guest appearances.

The show took some time to find its feet, with many of The Big Bang Theory's storylines aging badly, but it also included some of the best character redemption arcs, like Howard's journey from misogynistic creep to the family man and voice of reason of the group. Many of the show's flaws were addressed in Young Sheldon, and this paved the way for other spinoffs to improve on the original show. This has even allowed the most ambitious Big Bang Theory spinoff yet to be made, with the sci-fi comedy Stuart Fails to Save the Universe arriving in July.

There were some creative sci-fi and fantasy elements in The Big Bang Theory, with Arthur Jeffries appearing to Sheldon as a mentor figure inspired by Star Wars' Jedi masters, having a Mr. Spock figurine appeal to his conscience, and a Lord of the Rings-inspired episode that involved a character transforming into Gollum. Still, the show remained a comedy rather than a true work of sci-fi, but with Stuart Fails to Save the Universe involving the fan favorite character accidentally triggering a multiverse Armageddon, there is room for Big Bang Theory spinoffs to grow more creative.

Connor Con-nerd

Connor McAllister looking awkward

Connor McAllister does not appear in The Big Bang Theory, but after a small role in Young Sheldon, he became the breakout star of the other underrated spinoff, Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage. The character was recast between shows, with Dougie Baldwin replacing Joseph Apollonio as the quirky character who was often considered the Sheldon replacement. Connor is Mandy's younger brother and related to Sheldon by marriage, with Mandy marrying Sheldon's brother. Georgie.

Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage has an 89% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Connor is a music lover with a tendency to be shy and self-deprecating. This could be the key to a spinoff, as The Big Bang Theory has not yet explored a music angle with the exception of Raj and Howard's ill-fated rock band, "Footprints on the Moon." Seeing a fan favorite character like Connor get respect for his talents would be satisfying, and with many people being music nerds in the same way others are sci-fi nerds, this would provide an opportunity to showcase people in the music industry as The Big Bang Theory featured scientists and sci-fi icons.

Infinite Sheldon

Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) calculating something in his spot on the couch in The Big Bang Theory

In the episode "The 43 Peculiarity," Raj and Howard note that Sheldon disappears at the same time every day and drive themselves to distraction trying to work out what he is doing at that time. Three steps ahead of them, Sheldon pranks them by setting up a fake multiverse and alien face-hugger-inspired monster while it appears that there is a simple explanation, with Sheldon merely bouncing a ball. However, a spinoff could explore the possibility that this multiverse was the reality after all.

The Big Bang Theory ended because Jim Parsons wanted to move onto other projects, making it unlikely that he would want to return to extend the series. However, it has been established that there are several versions of the beloved Big Bang Theory character, and with Stuart Fails to Save the Universe introducing a multiverse to the franchise, this could allow Parsons to make some major changes to Sheldon. Seeing different Sheldons entering the multiverse could continue the Big Bang Theory genre switch, taking it from a love letter to sci-fi, to a sci-fi series.

Smart/Beautiful

When Leonard met Penny, he remarked that "our babies will be smart and beautiful." With Penny pregnant by the end of the series, the line is referenced again in the finale. Raising children with both science and sci-fi is no easy feat, as Howard and Bernadette prove, but raising a child with such drastically different parents could be a great foundation for a Penny and Leonard-centered series. Many Big Bang Theory fans have criticized Leonard as the weak link and a spinoff could offer the opportunity to change this, with the two becoming emotionally equal partners at last.

The idea of Young Sheldon was met with some apprehension from Big Bang Theory fans, but with the show getting an 84% positive audience rating with The Big Bang Theory getting 85%, it has been a resounding success and proof that child characters in sitcoms do not have to be annoying. Leonard and Penny's child could be school-aged with a hatred of pink as well as all things sci-fi, which could set both Leonard and Penny on journeys of discovery that they have not had since finalizing their relationship in The Big Bang Theory.

The Unsung Adventures Of Missy Cooper

Missy in Young Sheldon CBS

Missy Cooper has her hilarious scenes in The Big Bang Theory, but Young Sheldon does not give her as much character exploration as other people. In one of The Big Bang Theory's more serious moments, Sheldon and Georgie have a heart-to-heart conversation about the death of their father, during which Georgie explains that Missy was "a dumb teenager." While Missy's rebellion is explored to an extent, it is implied that she has always been ignored in favor of Sheldon, making it possible that she had a life that was far more interesting than her family knew.

The Big Bang Theory team could take some inspiration from Alexis Rose in Schitt's Creek, who constantly references her wild past despite viewers only knowing her in the context of her life at the motel. With Young Sheldon already establishing Sheldon as an unreliable narrator, a spinoff could get creative in explaining Missy's real life and adventures. For a sci-fi twist, this could involve a new identity, explaining why Mary Cooper described her as "dumb as soup."

Love And The Stars

Kunal Nayyar's Raj sits and looks glum on a couch in The Big Bang Theory

The Big Bang Theory finale betrayed several characters, but Raj's conclusion stings the most. As the group's resident romantic, his troubled dating life was often the butt of the joke. After such a striking transformation in the later episodes, Raj looked set to find love at the last possible moment, but this was not the case, and he remained the only character in the core group to remain single. Raj's confidence boost and job at the Griifth Observatory could show viewers a side of him that was introduced too late, and give him justice at last.

Anu

Combining The Big Bang Theory's nerd culture with the elements of Raj's beloved rom-coms could result in a spinoff that sci-fi and fantasy fans who also enjoy romance could love. The genre mix has rarely been explored as the premise for an entire show, which would allow The Big Bang Theory franchise to tread new ground once more, and continue the good work that the series started when the other core female characters were introduced.
