5 Free Steam Games Like The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead has secured its position as one of the defining franchises of the zombie genre, even if the show itself generally refuses to use the word. Since its earliest days when fans were reading the first few pages of the original comic book, plenty of people have been hooked, and we now have a veritable smorgasbord of direct adaptations to suit every taste.

In the world of video games, Telltale's story-driven effort remains the one that resonated most readily with fans, who continue to talk about the characters within to this day. The time since then has been notably more up and down on the official front, but there are plenty of other releases that you can play to evoke some of the same feelings, even if they aren't actual tie-ins.

Unturned

Visually very different from almost every game in the zombie genre, Unturned was created by solo developer Nelson Sexton at just 16-years old. The open world survival sandbox game is built in Unity, and its appearance certainly has shades of Minecraft and other similar blocky efforts. Underneath all of that, though, is a genuinely sound release that puts the emphasis on the player to scrap out their survival in a world dominated by the undead.

Dead Frontier 2

Dead Frontier 2 is a survival MMO where (if you're noticing a theme here), you'll be scratching out a living after humanity falls to a zombie-based apocalypse. The difference here is that you'll be doing it with other players, who you can trade and interact with, as well as working together, or taking each other on in PvP. The game is seven years old at this point, so there's a ton of content to jump into, with updates still regularly rolling out to keep things ship shape.

No More Room in Hell

Another standalone release built within the Source Engine, No More Room in Hell is a free-to-play survival horror that draws its inspiration from George Romero's "Of the Dead" series. The game supports co-op up to eight players, where you'll be working as a team to try and stay alive in the face of endless zombie hordes. The game features proximity chat, where your walkie-talkies get weaker the further away you are from one another, and a ton of different modes and weapons to keep things interesting.

Zombie Panic! Source

Yet another full release that technically counts itself as a standalone release to the original Half-Life mod of the same name. Built in the titular Source Engine, it comes with four game modes in Survival Mode, Objective Mode, Hardcore Mode, Custom Games, all of which give it solid replayability. If you've ever played a Source mod, you'll know what to expect from a gameplay standpoint, but there really is plenty of fun to be had here.

Codename CURE

Codename CURE is a first person, co-operative zombie game where you are tasked with "curing" the corrupted areas of a post-apocalyptic world by wiping out the zombie presence within. The game supports up to five players, with each selecting one specialism from Pointman, Support, Assault, Technician and Sniper. There's also a Survival mode where you can face endless waves of enemies to see how far you can get, with both offline and online available.
