RuneScape: Dragonwilds, a survival-crafting spinoff of the long-running MMORPG RuneScape, is coming to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium later this year, making it the first time a RuneScape game is coming to consoles. Jagex delivered the news today during Sony's State of Play.
For those who’ve never played Runescape, it’s a free-to-play MMO that launched on PC in 2001. It has accomplished the difficult task of remaining relevant over the decades: Since its release, players have created over 300 million accounts. Having originally launched in web browsers, there have been several iterations over the years, culminating in an updated version with modern combat and graphics (relatively speaking) sometimes referred to as RuneScape 3, which is on Steam.
There’s also a version of the original game (or more specifically, the 2.0 version) available for download called Old School RuneScape, which features chunky graphics and a classic combat system. At the time of publishing, Old School RuneScape had over 112,000 active players, which would currently place it among the top 10 most-played games on Steam.
While the original game is currently only available on PC, RuneScape: Dragonwilds coming to PS5 suggests that Jagex may be eyeing a console release of the original MMO in the future. A press release described the Dragonwilds news as “a landmark moment in Jagex’s strategy to expand the franchise to new platforms.” While RuneScape's old architecture and mouse-based controls may be difficult to port, if this spin-off does well on consoles, Jagex may give it a try.
