To their favor, Disney and Marvel have been valiantly trying to establish themselves in the horror genre lately, whether that’s been by debuting a brand-new Midnight universe/publishing line for Marvel Comics, or by commendably continuing to propel the alternate-universe Marvel Zombies brand as an animated Disney+ TV series. With its latest Marvel Zombies outing, Marvel has something special on its hands.
The Walking Dead wears its crown as top-tier post-apocalypse/zombie content proudly, and it’ll likely never be dethroned. That said, Marvel is giving The Walking Dead a run for its money with Marvel Zombies: War Zone.
Why The Walking Dead Is So Adored From Series To Series

One of the reasons why The Walking Dead is such a popular post-apocalypse franchise is that its premise is basic and tirelessly fascinating: batches of characters who you’re endeared to as the reader or viewer are constantly met with new conflicts and horrific scenarios as they struggle to survive. The key to a series like this being successful is having these characters be incredibly comprehensive and make interesting choices, whether or not they’re likable, and that their relationships with others are equally nuanced. Then, if a character is adored enough, their eventual death should have a profound effect on the story and other characters.
Dogged reanimated corpses that waddle around idly are hardly ever a true threat to anyone who’s spatially aware enough not to recklessly wander into the midst of a horde. Far worse, unironically, are the bandits, cannibals, and other such miscreants who are typically ordinary human beings who have endured a psychological fracture, resulting in them becoming a heinous villain as a sort of defense mechanism, much less out of perceived desperation and devastation.
War Zone Is Basically Marvel Zombies’ ‘The Walking Dead,’ And It’s Terrific

Marvel Zombies: War Zone isn’t the first Marvel Zombies comic book series, of course, but it’s arguably one of the better ones, even after only two issues. It’s a shame that Marvel Zombies: War Zone will only be five issues long because it’s maybe the closest it’s come to The Walking Dead regarding its atmosphere and narrative potential, at least regarding a plot centered around zombies.
In fact, it’s basically The Walking Dead but with superpowers, and it’s neat to see in issue #2 that Luke Cage’s Power Man, Linda Carter’s Night Nurse, and Danny Rand’s Iron Fist have been holed up in Harlem with other survivors. As Frank Castle’s Punisher notes, they’ve garnered a community, “Something to live for. To die for,” and that’s what Rick Grimes and his companions strived to do throughout all of The Walking Dead.
While the Hunger are no ordinary zombies, neither are Marvel Zombies’ characters all ordinary survivors, though Zombie Thor being unworthy to wield Mjolnir suggests that other nerfs could apply to the supervillains and superheroes who’ve been turned. Plus, this particular zombie apocalypse scenario allows for fun character moments: Luke doesn’t have to worry about zombie bites because he has unbreakable skin, for example, while Iron Fist, who got bitten, could cauterize his own arm after Punisher chopped it off. The solicitation for Marvel Zombies: War Zone #3 reads as follows:
HELL’S KITCHEN IS EMPTY, AND ALL THE DEVILS ARE COMING FOR PUNISHER’S HEAD!
As it becomes clear that there’s more to this zombie epidemic than meets the eye, PUNISHER must descend into the bowels of HELL’S KITCHEN to uncover answers! But danger lurks behind every corner as the unholy alliance between a zombified DAREDEVIL and BULLSEYE terrorizes the streets.
Backed into a corner, FRANK CASTLE is forced to make his own deal with the devil... but will he and ELEKTRA be able to put their differences aside to come out on top, or will the two tear each other apart first?!
Marvel Zombies: War Zone #3 is scheduled to be released on November 25, 2026.
