All 4 Actors To Play Robert Langdon

Langdon's character first appeared in 2000 in Brown's Angels & Demons and has starred in five novels since, including The Da Vinci Code, The Lost Symbol, Inferno, Origin, and Brown's latest novel, 2025's The Secret of Secrets. 2017's Origin is the only Robert Langdon novel without a released or planned adaptation, though that could still change. Another Langdon-centric adaptation is already on the way, after all, as Netflix plans to bring the character back to the small screen with a new actor taking on the intrepid academic.

Tom Hanks

National treasure Tom Hanks has portrayed Robert Langdon in three movie adaptations: The Da Vinci Code (2006), Angels & Demons (2009), and Inferno (2016). While the trilogy earned a respectable $1.5 billion at the global box office, The Da Vinci Code was by far its most financially successful outing, earning more than half of that total on its own. The issues with the movies (which contributed to their declining box office) were never the fault of Hanks or the rest of the cast, though.

Hanks, who could honestly play a role like this in his sleep, did his best to make the franchise's long, exposition-heavy scenes engaging. Unfortunately, the movies struggled to recreate Brown's fast-paced, single-day structure, turning Langdon's adventures into less entertaining flicks. They never quite found the right balance between Langdon's academic interests, the ancient puzzles, and the necessary action scenes.

Robert Clotworthy

Ron Howard and Tom Hanks' Da Vinci Code movie wasn't the only adaptation of Brown's second Langdon novel. On the same day the movie was released in theaters in North America, The Collective and 2K published The Da Vinci Code, a single-player, third-person adventure puzzle game for Xbox, PlayStation 2, and PC.

Noted voice-over actor Robert Clotworthy portrayed Langdon in the game. Recent credits include narrating History Channel documentary series like Ancient Aliens and The Curse of Oak Island. Clotworthy's voice can be heard in games like StarCraft, The Last of Us Part II, Batman: The Enemy Within, among others.

Ashley Zukerman

Five years after Inferno's disappointing box office haul, NBC and Peacock decided to take a different approach to the character. The Lost Symbol marked Robert Langdon's first appearance on the small screen; Ashley Zukerman's (Silo, Manhattan) portrayal was significantly younger than in previous adaptations, with the series functioning as a prequel to Hanks' movies rather than a sequel. In the show, a less experienced Robert is recruited by the CIA when his mentor, Professor Peter Solomon, mysteriously disappears.

The series was originally conceived as a network TV pilot before NBC moved it to Peacock, a year after the streaming service's original launch. Unfortunately, The Lost Symbol was canceled after one 10-episode season, failing to win over critics and audiences with its lengthy adaptation of Brown's third Langdon novel.

Morgan Spector

After the Robert Langdon movie trilogy and Peacock's one-and-done The Lost Symbol, it's Netflix's turn to take a crack at Brown's work. Together with legendary showrunner Carlton Cuse, whose work includes Jack Ryan, Lost, and Locke & Key, Netflix and Brown are adapting The Secret of Secrets into a yet-untitled TV series.

Morgan Spector (The Gilded Age, Pearson) has been cast as the whip-less Indiana Jones in the upcoming show. The Secret of Secrets also marks the return of The Lost Symbol's Katherine Solomon, a renowned noetic scientist, whose groundbreaking research in human consciousness will play a major role in the Prague-set story. Rebecca Hall (Monster, The Beauty) has been cast as Solomon, Langdon's first long-term love interest. Fun fact: Spector and Hall are married in real life, so it should be fun to see their chemistry on screen.

Will Morgan Spector be the last actor to play Robert Langdon? That remains to be seen.
