Scarlett Johansson’s New A24 Movie Adds Major Fallout & Pluribus Stars

It was reported in May that Johansson was the first actor to be cast in the new movie directed and written by Ari Aster. The filmmaker has helmed several A24 movies before, including Hereditary, Midsommar, Beau is Afraid, and Eddington. In addition to writing and directing, he is producing his next collaboration with creative partner Lars Knudsen via their Square Peg production banner. Johansson's casting was later followed by the additions of Jude Law and Jacob Elordi.

According to Deadline, Scapegoat has now added Ella Purnell, Samba Schutte, and Caleb Landry Jones to the cast. All plot, character, and genre details remain under wraps, as is often the case with Aster's movies. There have been rumors about it being a science-fiction romance, a traditional drama, or the story of a doctor operating on an internet celebrity, but none of this speculation has been confirmed to be accurate as of this writing.

Purnell plays protagonist Lucy MacClean in Prime Video's hit sci-fi video game series adaptation of Fallout. Some of the other characters Purnell has played include Jackie Taylor in Yellowjackets, Jinx in Arcane, Gwyn in Star Trek: Prodigy, Rhiannon Lewis in Sweetpea, Tess in Sweetbitter, Emma in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Kate Ward in Army of the Dead, Lady Maria Grey in Belgravia, and Jane in Invincible.

Schutte is best known for portraying Koumba Diabaté, one of the few individuals immune to the alien virus in Apple TV's Emmy-Award-winning show Pluribus. Other than Carol Sturka (Rhea Seehorn) and Manousos Oviedo (Carlos Manuel-Vesga), he has the most screen time and development out of all the immune characters, and received a Saturn Award nomination for his performance. On X, Schutte reposted the casting announcement and wrote, "So damn thrilled and grateful for this one."

As for Jones, his credits include playing Jeremy Armitage in Jordan Peele's Get Out, Banshee in X-Men: First Class, Red Welby in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Jack in The Florida Project, and Steven Burnett in Twin Peaks.

Aster's four previous A24 movies have featured Toni Collette, Florence Pugh, Will Poulter, Joaquin Phoenix, Patti LuPone, Nathan Lane, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, and Austin Butler. However, having Johansson, Law, Elordi, Purnell, Schutte, and Jones all in one cast may be his most star-studded ensemble yet.

Outside of Scapegoat, Johannson's upcoming projects include Brad Bird's animated Netflix film Ray Gunn, Mike Flanagan's The Exorcist movie, and The Batman: Part II. Purnell is reprising the role of Lucy for Fallout season 3 and Rhiannon in Sweetpea season 2, while Schutte returns to play Diabaté in Pluribus season 2.
