The Mac mini now carries a starting price of $899, representing an increase from the $799 price point established in May, and offers configuration options featuring either the newly launched M6 chip or an M5 Pro processor. AAPL stock experienced a decline of 0.34% during trading, hovering near $309.30.

The Mac Studio begins at $2,499 when equipped with the M5 Max chip and extends to $5,499 for the M5 Ultra variant. A maximum-specification Mac Studio featuring the M5 Ultra reaches a price point of $18,299.

Both desktop systems are now available for preorder and will become available in retail locations on September 22. They come equipped with macOS 27 Golden Gate, which Apple will distribute to existing Mac owners this autumn.

The M6 represents Apple’s inaugural chip manufactured using a 2-nanometer fabrication process. It incorporates a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. The chip delivers memory bandwidth of 170 gigabytes per second, marking a 10% enhancement compared to the M5.

“Built using the cutting-edge 2nm process, M6 combines a new CPU complex, two additional CPU and GPU cores, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and more unified memory bandwidth,” said Sri Santhanam, Apple’s VP of Silicon Engineering.

The base Mac mini equipped with M6 comes with 16GB of unified memory. The M5 Pro configuration supports expansion up to 64GB.

Mac Studio Targets Professional Workflows

The Mac Studio caters specifically to professional users requiring substantial computing capabilities. The M5 Ultra variant provides up to a 36-core CPU and an 80-core GPU, supporting a maximum of 512GB of unified memory.

The M5 Ultra employs a quad-die design, linking two dual-die M5 Max chips through Apple’s UltraFusion technology. This configuration achieves 1.2 terabytes per second of memory bandwidth, representing a 50% increase over the M3 Ultra.

Both desktop models feature Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 connectivity. The Mac mini maintains the compact design language first introduced with the M4 generation in 2024.

Supply Constraints Drive Price Increases

The Mac mini’s price escalation from $599 to $899 occurred gradually. Apple discontinued the $599 entry-level model in May, raising the minimum price to $799. The latest announcement pushes it further to $899.

Outgoing CEO Tim Cook, who will depart at month’s end, acknowledged during Apple’s Q2 earnings call that demand for both the Mac mini and Mac Studio has exceeded available supply. He identified advanced chip node capacity, rather than memory availability, as the primary constraint.

“I think on the Mac Mini and the Mac Studio, I believe it will take several months to reach supply-demand balance,” Cook said.

The Mac mini has gained significant traction among developers deploying AI agents on local hardware, with OpenClaw frequently mentioned as a popular application.

Apple has additionally verified its plans to commence domestic manufacturing of the Mac mini in the United States later this year.
