Avatar is one of the more interesting blockbuster franchises that's come out since the 2000s. While there are still plenty of decades-old properties like Star Wars that are still pumping out projects, Avatar isn't even 20 years old. It's hosted three films so far, with the next one tentatively due out in 2029.
You could say it's still a fledgling franchise, but it sure doesn't act like one, given how much money it makes and how there are already theme park attractions dedicated to it. We won't have to wait years for the next Avatar drop, though. Thanks to a new official announcement, we know that Avatar is officially returning on July 21.
Thanks to a new post from the PSN, we know that Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will be hitting PlayStation Plus as part of the Game Catalog service on July 21. It'll be available globally, and playable on PS5, as well as PlayStation Portal.
For those of you who weren't aware that there was an open-world Avatar game, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was released in 2023, developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft. It incorporates the world of the film, and you'll play a Na'vi on Pandora from either a first-person or third-person perspective (the latter was added two years after launch and is live in the current build).
Here's a swift overview of what you're getting yourself into: "Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a first-person, action-adventure game set in the open world of the never-before-seen Western Frontier of Pandora. Abducted by the human militaristic corporation known as the RDA, you, a Na’vi, were trained and moulded to serve their purpose. Fifteen years later, you are free, but find yourself a stranger in your birthplace. Reconnect with your lost heritage, discover what it truly means to be Na’vi, and join other clans to protect Pandora from the RDA."
If you end up getting sucked into the world of Pandora, there are two DLC expansions available. The first is Sky Breaker, which features a mysterious shadow in the sky and additional missions against the RDA. Then there's Secrets of the Spires, which adds extra aerial sabotage missions.
But the most significant DLC is easily From the Ashes, which dropped in late 2025 to promote the third mainline Avatar film. You'll play as a Na'vi named So'lek, and the DLC shifts to a third-person viewpoint (though first-person is still available), while taking on the Ash Clan.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora seems done with DLC for the moment, but there's a lot of open world there to explore with what we've got.
