How to find and breed the best Pals for your base

Pals make the world go ‘round in Palworld, and you’ll want a good team of them to keep things going at your base. Each Pal has different "work suitability" skills, meaning that some may mine rocks whereas others may water crops. You want a diverse group of Pals to keep things going, but you don’t want them to be too diverse. To help you out, we’ve compiled a list of the best Pals for your base.

You’ll quickly realize that when you have a Pal who does a lot of different things, like Penking, who has many base skills, they get distracted and don’t actually do the task you want them to do. While you may want Penking to mine, he might run off to water crops. To fix this, you can build a monitoring stand once you hit level 7, allowing you to assign Pals to specific stations.

Below, we list out several Pals that are good in mid-game and late-game for the tasks you’ll need the most. (Early-game, you can functionally just make do with whatever you find around the map.) We also list where to find them or what to breed to get them, if they’re tricky to find. Most Pals have multiple locations to find them and dozens of breeding combinations, but we tried to list the easiest locations and combos. (We have a guide on the fastest flying mount, if you’re looking for that kind of thing.)

Best base Pals for each job in Palworld

Here’s a quick list of the best base Pals for each job in Palworld:

  • Solenne (Handiwork)
  • Renjishi (Kindling)
  • Aegidron (Mining)
  • Shaolong (Watering)
  • Orserk (Generating Electricity)
  • Dandilord (Planting)
  • Jetragon (Gathering)
  • Celesdir Noct (Lumbering)
  • Silvance (Medicine Production)
  • Bastigor (Cooling)
  • Knocklem (Transporting)

Note that most of these Pals are mostly locked to the endgame World Tree area. To get there, you'll need to complete the story, defeat all eight tower bosses, and continue on with the instructed story.

It should be said that I don't really use the "best" Pals for my personal base. While some tasks, like Watering, Handiwork, and Generating Electricity are very necessary, I only use mid-tier Pals for things like Medicine Production, Gathering, and Cooling, which seem to have less of a demand while making late-game items.

Though the above picks are endgame choices, we also detail some mid-game choices for you to find around the world, since you won’t be able to get the best of the best until later in the game. Note that there are a lot of Pals to pick from and our mid-game picks are chosen based on which have higher work skill levels, while also being accessible.

You can read more of an explanation on where to find these Pals and why we picked them below.

Best Pals for Handiwork in Palworld

You’ll need Pals with Handiwork to help you craft items and make new structures. Some late-game items and structures take a long time to craft and if you don’t want to stand around for three minutes holding down a single button, then you need some guys to help you craft.

Best mid-game Pal for Handiwork: Anubis

  • Skill levels: Handiwork 6, Mining 6, Transporting 4

Anubis is really useful as it's multi-functional, being able to both mine and help you craft. We recommend just nabbing the Alpha Anubis in the central desert area, but there's also some on Sandstone Gate Islet (northwest of Feybreak Island), but the Alpha in the desert will be easier to grab. The Alpha Anubis in the desert is level 55 — which is a smidgen higher than what we'd consider "mid-game," but it is so useful that we do recommend nabbing this as soon as you're able to.

Best endgame Pal for Handiwork: Solenne

  • Breeding combinations: Frostallion + Blazamut
  • Skill levels: Handiwork 8, Gathering 4, Transporting 2

Solenne has the highest level Handiwork in the game, making her pretty great for crafting items in your base. She is, however, mostly locked to the endgame World Tree area, in the green area on the west side. You can also breed her using some of the higher-level Pals you can find on the Palpagos Islands.

Best Pals for Kindling in Palworld

Pals with Kindling help you smelt ingots and cook food. They’ll also power any heaters you have. You’ll want faster smelting speeds later on in the game, as you need tons of ingots and you’ll want a constant supply of them coming in.

Best mid-game Pal for Kindling: Pyrin

  • Breeding combination: Ribbuny + Relaxaurus
  • Skill levels: Kindling 4, Lumbering 2

You can nab Pyrin in the wild from the areas with lava pools on Mount Obsidian. These things are roaming around just about everywhere, sometimes in packs, but also sometimes alone.

Best endgame Pal for Kindling: Renjishi

  • Breeding combination: Blazamut + Jormuntide Ignis
  • Skill levels: Kindling 8, Handiwork 6, Gathering 5, Transporting 5

Renjishi is the best Kindling Pal available, though again, it's locked to the very endgame World Tree area, as an Alpha Pal, deep within the cavernous area in the northeast of the World Tree. You can, however, get it a bit earlier by breeding a Blazamut and Jormuntide Ignis.

Best Pals for Mining in Palworld

Mining Pals will help you farm all the ore deposits you'll need. These Pals are especially important, as these resources will be your main ingredient for advanced Pal spheres and ammo.

Best mid-game Pal for Mining: Blazamut

  • Skill levels: Kindling 6, Mining 7

These are among the best Mining Pals in the game, and you can actually find them at a much lower level than you would think. They're in the mid-40s, and you can find them on Flamepulse Islet to the east of the large desert area. If you do want a meatier one, there's a level 52 Alpha version on Mount Obsidian.

Best endgame Pal for Mining: Aegidron

  • Breeding combinations: Frostallion + Jetragon
  • Skill levels: Mining 8

Just like Renjishi, Aegidron is another Pal that can really only be found as an Alpha in the endgame World Tree area. You can find it along the southwestern path, though it'll look like a tent when you first approach it. It'll open up to reveal its regular form during combat. It is the best miner in the game, but if you don't want to go through the trouble, sticking with Blazamut isn't a bad choice.

Best Pals for Watering in Palworld

While you don’t need an expert Pal to water your crops, you’ll want one for grinding stone into Paldium fragments. These Pals will also mill any wheat you have into flour, which is also always nice to have for cooking.

Best mid-game Pal for Watering: Azurobe

  • Skill levels: Watering 4

There's a plethora of Azurobe in this lake northwest of the starting area, as well as a level 40 Alpha version in the center to help you with all your watering needs.

Best endgame Pal for Watering: Shaolong

Shaolong, a blue long dragon, floats around in Palworld Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Pocketpair via Polygon
  • Skill levels: Watering 8, Gathering 5

Just like the other best-of-the-best Pals, Shaolong can only be found in the World Tree area — and it can't be bred by anything but itself. You can find Shaolong along the paths in the southern central area of the map, around the mysterious round structure. These Shaolong notably aren't as huge as the one Auri was using in your tower boss fight, so don't expect to see a huge dragon on your map as you fly in.

Best Pals for Generating Electricity in Palworld

Once your base starts using electricity, you'll need Pals to power it up.

Best mid-game Pal for Generating Electricity: Grizzbolt

A sleeping Grizzbolt in a cave in Palworld Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Pocketpair via Polygon
  • Skill levels: Generating Electricity 5, Handiwork 4, Lumbering 3, Transporting 5

You can find a level 30 Alpha Grizzbolt in the No. 1 Wildlife Sanctuary in a cave. This sanctuary is south of the starting area, but the closest teleport point will be on the western beaches nearby.

Best endgame Pal for Generating Electricity: Orserk

A swarm of sleeping Orserk in Palworld Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Pocketpair via Polygon
  • Skill levels: Generating Electricity 8, Handiwork 3, Transporting 4

Orserk can only be found in the World Tree. We found them along the path in the northeast area that leads into the red skeleton-filled area, though you can also find them sparingly in the aforementioned red zone to the west.

Best Pals for Planting in Palworld

These Pals will grab nearby seeds and plant them in your gardens, giving you a functionally infinite supply of food.

Best mid-game Pal for Planting: Broncherry

  • Skill levels: Planting 5

Broncherry can be found in many locations, but we had a lot of luck finding it all over the central island that's north of the iconic red forest near the starting area.

Best endgame Pal for Planting: Dandilord

Dandilord, a special boss in Palworld Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Pocketpair via Polygon
  • Skill levels: Planting 8, Handiwork 6, Gathering 5, Medicine Production 6, Transporting 3

Dandilord is a boss fight in the World Tree area. It's actually one of the three you need to complete in order to beat the game. You can find it in the Rotmist Root dungeon, along the northern edge of the map in the red area filled with bones.

Best Pals for Gathering in Palworld

Gathering Pals harvest your crops for you. This is, again, a task that can be done by lesser Pals, but if you realize your crops are being bottlenecked, here are some Pals you can upgrade to.

Best mid-game Pal for Gathering: Lyleen

  • Skill levels: Planting 7, Handiwork 5, Gathering 6, Medicine Production 5

Lyleen is good at a lot of things, making it somewhat valuable just to have on your base as an all-rounder. You can find a level 58 Alpha version in Sakurajima, in the northern part of the flower fields, right before it turns into a desert.

Again, this is a little bit high-level for "mid-game" but it's definitely worth grabbing if you need a Pal with a plethora of good work skills. If you go here at night, there will also be an Alpha Lyleen Noct itching for a fight. To avoid trouble, we recommend only fighting this Lyleen during the daytime.

Best endgame Pal for Gathering: Jetragon

  • Skill levels: Gathering 8

Yes, Jetragon is the highest Gathering Pal in the game, but this admittedly feels like overkill. I would not flood your base with Jetragons unless you really want to. Jetragon is only found as an Alpha Pal on the floating islands in the southern part of the map. Among the floating islands, it's on the northwest most isle, called Dragonmark Peak.

Best Pals for Lumbering in Palworld

Lumbering Pals will chop wood for you, which you can functionally never have too much of.

Best mid-game Pal for Lumbering: Wumpo

  • Skill levels: Handiwork 3, Lumbering 5, Cooling 5, Transporting 6

Wumpo can help do a lot of stuff, including Cooling, if you'd like. You can find Wumpo in the northern half of the snowy mountain area, which is on the northern half of the map.

Best endgame Pal for Lumbering: Celesdir Noct

  • Breeding combination: Celesdir + Kitsun Noct
  • Skill levels: Gathering 4, Lumbering 8

This is another Pal that kind of feels like overkill, but if you really need wood or you want to have the best Pals for clout, you can find Celesdir Noct as an Alpha Pal boss in the World Tree area with the castle-like structures, before the bridge to the sealed-off final area. Annoyingly, this is a double Alpha fight with regular Celesdir also in the arena.

Best Pals for Medicine Production in Palworld

Medicine Production Pals help specifically craft healing items at medicine workbenches.

Best mid-game Pal for Medicine Production: Lyleen

Lyleen, a gowned flower Pal, walking in a flower field in Palworld Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Pocketpair via Polygon
  • Skill levels: Planting 7, Handiwork 5, Gathering 6, Medicine Production 5

Yes, Lyleen again, since its Medicine Production is level five. You can find a level 58 Alpha version in Sakurajima, in the northern part of the flower fields, right before it turns into a desert. However, we recommend going during the day, because there will also be an Alpha Lyleen Noct.

Best endgame Pal for Medicine Production: Silvance

  • Skill levels: Planting 6, Handiwork 6, Gathering 4, Medicine Production 8, Transporting 2

Just like Dandilord, Silvance is an endgame boss that's required for the story within the World Tree. You can find its dungeon in the southernmost point of the World Tree in a dungeon, but you will have to fight it to roll credits on the game.

Best Pals for Cooling in Palworld

These Pals power your refrigerator and other food storage devices, preventing the food from spoiling. This is another skill that doesn't seem to require a super-powerful Pal, but if your food is going bad, then you can upgrade to one of these.

Best mid-game Pal for Cooling: Icelyn

A sleeping Icelyn in Palworld Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Pocketpair via Polygon
  • Skill levels: Handiwork 5, Medicine Production 4, Cooling 5, Transporting 2

You can use Icelyn or you can use the Wumpo we talk about in the above section for Cooling. They're both found in the same area, on the northern half of the snowy mountain island, which is in the northern half of the map.

Best endgame Pal for Cooling: Bastigor

Bastigor, a beast who does martial arts, walking around an icy area in Palworld Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Pocketpair via Polygon
  • Skill levels: Lumbering 6, Mining 5, Cooling 8

This is another Pal that feels like overkill, but if you want a Bastigor to work in your base, you can find it in the snowy areas in the World Tree. You can find them all around the icy zone, but we found a lot around the frozen lake, in the southern part of the icy zone.

Best Pals for Transporting in Palworld

Transporting Pals pick up harvested materials (like ore or wood) off the ground and carry it to a chest. Many of the Pals listed above, like Renjishi, Solenne, and Anubis, can do this for you during their downtime, but if you notice that there's too much rubbish crowding your floors, you may want to grab a Pal who focuses on this solely.

Best mid-game Pal for Transporting: Ragnahawk

A Ragnahawk flying above lava in Palworld Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Pocketpair via Polygon
  • Skill levels: Kindling 4, Transporting 5

You can find Ragnahawk pretty much anywhere where there's lava around Mount Obsidian, which is on the west side of map. We found a good amount around the eastern lava pools.

Best endgame Pal for Transporting: Knocklem

An Alpha Knocklem in a castle in Palworld Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Pocketpair via Polygon
  • Skill levels: Gathering 4, Mining 7, Transporting 7

This is yet another Pal that isn't super necessary for an efficient base, but if you want to grab one, there's actually a level 55 Alpha version on Mount Obsidian. You can also find them in the No. 3 Wildlife Sanctuary in the northeast part of the map, though they're a higher level there (and annoying to catch due to the drones patrolling the sanctuary).
