Big Price Drop on Blackmagic Design Cinema Cameras Including The PXYIS 6K

A massive price drop across its line of cinema cameras allows Blackmagic Design to, once again, offer excellent value to filmmakers on a budget.

I’m often recommending Blackmagic Design products to up-and-coming filmmakers for a multitude of reasons. There’s the quality reason, of course. But what sets Blackmagic Design cameras and software apart for me is the value proposition. They seem to be the only corporation I’m aware of that is hellbent on making less money. Of course, I say that tongue in cheek. They’ve been around for decades, so I assume they are doing just fine when it comes to making money. But not a month goes by, it seems, without someone asking me the honest question, “With such great prices (and DaVinci Resolve even being free), how do they actually make a profit?”

Well, thankfully, Blackmagic Design’s financial statements are not my responsibility. What is my responsibility is passing along news that is genuinely valuable to filmmakers. And this most recent price drop is just that.

The price drop affects four Blackmagic Design models.

• Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K from USD $2,715 to $1,595
• Blackmagic PYXIS 6K L from USD $3,080 to $1,995
• Blackmagic PYXIS 6K EF from USD $3,070 to $1,995
• Blackmagic PYXIS 6K PL from USD $3,265 to $2,195

Blackmagic says these price drops are the result of an improved sourcing process that allows them to get the necessary parts for less money, savings which they can then pass along to their customers. The long and short of it is that you can now purchase a brand-new, purpose-built cinema camera with 6K resolution, Blackmagic Design’s excellent filmic color science, internal Raw and real monitoring tools, and even autofocus with the most recent firmware updates, for as little as $1,595.

Whether the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K or the PYXIS is the right tool for your workflow is a matter of personal choice. But one thing that is clear is that the value proposition just got even harder to beat.
