Challenge Star Tyler Duckworth’s Mom Speaks Out After His Sudden Death

After Tyler Duckworth, who won two seasons of MTV’s The Challenge, died this week, his mom Joni said he's “gone on to a better place where the hurts and challenges (pun intended) are no longer.”

Tyler Duckworth’s mom is fondly remembering her son.

After Joni Duckworth announced The Challenge star’s death at the age of 44, she reflected on his personal and professional evolution.

“My Ty-Guy would skip to school when he was little,” she told People Aug. 14. “Tyler found his passion in teaching and he was good at it. I understand his students loved him. He taught world history. He loved history and geography and as he had traveled the world over I am sure he brought many insights to his students.”

Now, as she put it, “He has now gone on to a better place where the hurts and challenges (pun intended) are no longer.”

Joni revealed Aug. 13 that Tyler had died “earlier this week,” though she noted his cause of death had yet to be determined.

Meanwhile, North Dakota’s Grand Forks Police Department told E! News that Tyler was found in his apartment bathroom where there were no signs of foul play, nor did the death appear to be suspicious. Police are now waiting for toxicology results.

Amid her loss, Joni emphasized her appreciation for her son’s community, sharing with People, “To all of Tyler’s friends and fans—God bless you for loving my Ty-Guy.”

After the news of Tyler’s death, many of his fellow Challenge alums paid tribute to the MTV legend, who won two seasons of the show.

For his part, Johnny Bananas—who was ousted by Tyler during 2010’s Cutthroat season, but returned to partner with him the next year for Rivals, which they won together—simply wrote on X Aug. 13, “When it rains it pours.”

Meanwhile, Challenge all-star Wes Bergmann shared his heartbreak after losing who he called “one of the most remarkable men I’ve ever met.”

“I’m struggling dealing with our loss yesterday,” he wrote on X Aug. 14. “He lived an inspiring life and leveraged every minute he had. I’m just sick thinking of how big of a hole he left in y’all’s hearts, the Challenge family’s heart, and his actual family’s heart.”
