The long-discussed Community movie has received another candid update.

The six-season comedy series ran from 2009 to 2015, leading to the popular fan campaign "six seasons and a movie." Peacock officially announced the follow-up movie in 2022, with its original cast Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong to reprise their roles. Donald Glover and Yvette Nicole Brown have also subsequently confirmed their involvement.

In an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan for President Curtis, Harmon confirmed that nobody has canceled the Community movie. However, he explained that coordinating the schedules has left the project in a "holding pattern," with cast members understandably needing to accept other work while waiting for production to come together.

Harmon said:

"There’s nothing I can say that won’t just add to frustration and confusion. No one has killed it. It is not dead. There’s a cycle—there’s a water table in planning movies that includes having to wrangle all the actors’ schedules. Actors who are not being paid nearly enough to devote a giant chunk of their calendar. So, it’s like whack-a-mole, where it’s like, “Well, of course this person needs to now go feed their family by taking another job.'"

Harmon also addressed speculation that the delay came from not finishing the screenplay. Joking about the difficulty of writing around the cast’s uncertain availability, the creator explained:

"And then all of those people will tell you, “Harmon’s not writing the script.” And then I’ll go, “What am I supposed to say? Fade in on whoever shows up?'"

Although Harmon’s comments confirm that the movie has not been abandoned, they also demonstrate how difficult it is to reunite the ensemble. Because the cast's chemistry, including the love-triangle between Britta, Jeff, and Annie, plays such an essential role in the series, moving forward without all its central cast members could prevent the movie from delivering the reunion audiences had anticipated.

As reported by Collider, executive producer Steve Levy recently revealed on Six Seasons & a Podcast that conversations about the movie occur weekly or biweekly. Levy also recalled recently meeting with Harmon, co-writer Andrew Guest, and McHale to discuss its status, confirming,

"We’re still producing it as best as we can, it’s just a slow process.”

Levy emphasized that no single person is responsible for the delay. Harmon refers to the process of the game as a “whack-a-mole”, as coordinating the project requires numerous cast and crew members to be available at the same time. Together, their comments confirm that the producers continue discussing the movie regularly, despite it remaining in what Harmon describes as a “holding pattern.”

Although fans may be disappointed by the continued uncertainty, Harmon’s transparency should actually offer some reassurance. He remains adamant that the movie has not been canceled and promises to tell fans if that changes.

"But the good news is, if someone puts a stake through its heart and says, “Die, Community movie, die,” and it’s dead, I’ll be the first to say."

"But I think it’s just kind of in a holding pattern, and we’re hoping to put it together as soon as possible."

Harmon also told Newsweek in 2022 that the movie could arrive “between one and eight years” from that point. While fans may hope the wait does not last the full eight years, the project remains within Harmon’s original estimated timeline.

After years of anticipation, making the movie without its core group could just undermine the reunion audiences want to see. “Six seasons and a movie” remains a fan prophecy, but Harmon is still hoping to bring the cast together and fulfill it.

All six seasons of Community are currently available to stream in the U.S. on Peacock and Hulu.
