The Legend of Vox Machina has never been afraid to shake up fans' expectations, and season 4 is no exception. We’ve had Grog singing, the disappearance of Scanlan Shorthalt (Sam Riegel’s beloved halfling bard), and an epic underwater battle featuring Marisha Ray’s elven druid, Keyleth. Now in The Legend of Vox Machina’s episode 5, titled “De Rolo’s Eleven,” Critters are treated to an epic heist.

The heist episode is a masterclass in combining Critical Role's clear love for comedy capers with the expansive world of Exandria, but there’s one character in particular that stands out: Taliesin Jaffe as the gunslinging Percival de Rolo.

A year after he and the rest of Vox Machina defeated the nefarious dragons of the Chroma Conclave, Percy has the opportunity to step into a leadership role and run the group's heist on the Cobalt Soul's archives. It’s an event which puts Percy back into the limelight and, as Jaffe explains, tests the very limits of his know-how.

“Percy gets to really try out just how smart he is,” Jaffe tells Polygon via a video interview. “We find out what happens when he takes over his own episode and gets everyone to do what he thinks for once.”

We won’t delve into how well the heist goes, but among all the members of Vox Machina, the fact that it is Percy who takes charge of determining the best way to approach the break-in shows just how far he has come since his early beginnings.

Percy was center stage during the first season of The Legend of Vox Machina, where his quest for vengeance against Delilah and Sylas Briarwood, fueled by his deal with the demonic Orthax, puts him and the rest of Vox Machina in harm's way. His inability to look past revenge ended up hurting him more often than not, and it was this single-minded focus that made his leadership skills questionable.

However, the gunslinger has since undergone a slew of narrative arcs. He has returned from the dead with the help of half-elf rogue Vax'ildan (Liam O'Brien) and fallen in love with half-elf ranger, Vex'ahlia (Laura Bailey). Happy and comfortable, Percy has gone from being aloof and a loner to an ideal leader. Yet, as any great heist movie will tell you, no matter how well your leader plans, something is bound to go wrong.

Critters can check out how successful Vox Machina was, with the first six episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 now available to stream on Prime Video.
