Dave Hughes responds to Robert Irwin's dig about him at the Logies after skipping the awards to attend a Liberal Party event

Dave Hughes has revealed why he skipped the Logie Awards and has responded to Robert Irwin's cheeky dig at him during the ceremony.

The comedian, 55, appeared on the Today show on Monday morning after missing television's night of nights to attend a Liberal Party event in Geelong.

During the Logies, host Irwin poked fun at Hughes while joking about potential television reboots.

'I hear that Channel Ten is also developing a reboot of Hughesy, We Have a Problem,' Robert said.

'And I think it's called No, Seriously, Hughesy, We Have a Problem.'

Hughes insisted he was delighted to receive a mention despite not being in the room.

Dave Hughes has revealed why he skipped the Logie Awards and has responded to Robert Irwin's cheeky dig at him during the ceremony

'It makes me proud, to be honest,' he told Today.

'I knew I'd get a mention at the Logies last night and I didn't have to be there, so that was a win.'

Hughes then conceded Irwin may have had a point before congratulating the young wildlife warrior on his hosting performance.

'We do have a problem in this country, there's no doubt about it. So Rob is right, and I appreciate him mentioning it,' he said.

'That's great. Well done, Robert, and good job hosting - and well done to Sam Pang and every winner last night, and every loser as well.'

Hughes explained he had instead travelled to Geelong to help launch local Liberal candidates ahead of Victoria's state election in November.

The event was held at a bowls club and attracted considerably more media attention than the veteran stand-up comedian had expected.

'I was confronted with more questions by the media down there than I ever have been at the Logies,' he joked.

'I felt like it was my moment. I'm driving myself down there and there were three or four cameras and all the focus was on me.'

Hughes said he had thrown his support behind the Liberal Party because he wanted to see a change of government in Victoria.

'All I want to do is change the government down here in Victoria,' he said.

'I'm jumping on the Liberals to hopefully get the job done.'

The outspoken media personality acknowledged his increasingly political social media commentary had attracted both supporters and critics.

He also revealed his wife, Holly Ife, had warned him that formally entering politics could spell the end of their marriage.

'She says that if you actually enter politics, we have to get divorced,' Hughes joked.

'That's something to think about. But we could do a sham divorce where we've got separate houses and it might even be tax effective.'

His 13-year-old daughter had also asked him to stop discussing politics because one of her school friends disagreed with his views.

'I said, 'All right, well, if a 13-year-old at a school doesn't agree with me, I'd better stop,' he joked.

Hughes rejected criticism that his political campaigning was motivated by concerns about his investment properties and tax changes.

He said his initial interest had been sparked by budget policy, but claimed his wider focus was now government spending and accountability.

'People can say what they like. I know why I'm doing this,' he said.

'I want the governments to know that we're going to start looking at what you're doing with our money.'
