DC Officially Unveils A God-Tier Weapon All Villains Are Terrified Of

Jared is a writer, editor, and Communications Studies graduate who loves popular nerd culture (almost anything to do with Marvel, DC, Star Wars, or The Lord of the Rings) and the interactive storytelling medium. Jared's first console was the PS1, wherein he fell for Spider-Man, Spyro the Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot.

If for no other reason than it being an excuse to see more of the side characters and Gotham City residents who wouldn’t be given the time of day otherwise, DC Comics’ Batman: Bad Seeds crossover event is fantastic. Indeed, all of Gotham is being terraformed by Poison Ivy’s ancient superbloom, and, while Batman has spelunked beneath the city to ask for Victor and Nora Fries’ help in reclaiming Gotham, it’s fascinating that so many tie-in books are dedicated to depicting the exploits of other heroes during this event, namely the ones who don’t wear capes or cowls.

For example, Batman: Bad Seeds - Gotham Central follows some of the few Gotham City Police Department officers who aren’t corrupt as they pursue both Lonnie Machin’s Anarky and Victor Zsasz. In Batman: Bad Seeds - Gotham Central #1, it was revealed that Zsasz broke out of Arkham Towers and carved “NO CROWN” into the chest of a maintenance technician named Charlie. In the final chapter of this two-part tie-in, we hear from Zsasz’s own mouth why he’s so afraid of the Crown of Storms.

Dr. Annika Zeller’s Crown Of Storms Is Every Villain’s Worst Fear

Matt Fraction’s ongoing Batman run began the series’ newest relaunch by demonstrating how empathetic Batman is toward the troubled antagonists he’s become incredibly familiar with, and Dr. Annika Zeller debuted in the first issue as both a potential love interest of Bruce Wayne’s and a brand-new threat to scum and villainy. Instead of breaking bones and wearing a costume, though, Dr. Zeller offers emotional regulation and wears a white laboratory coat (she also ditches her shoes, so long as she’s walking on Arkham Towers’ high-tech and color-coded tiled flooring.

Aside from her warmth and compassion, however, Dr. Zeller’s greatest weapon is a cutting-edge treatment that allows her to “manage the hyper-bioelectric activity” in a patient’s mind. For lack of a better phrasing, the Crown of Storms can theoretically “cure” psychosis, and that’s why Zsasz is hunting and trying to kill Dr. Zeller.

After Waylon Jones and even Joker have seemingly taken to this treatment and come out the other side with greater clarity, it was only a matter of time before an iconic Batman supervillain would violently resist the Crown of Storms treatment due to what such a treatment would mean for their quality of life and the sanctity of their mind. In Batman: Bad Seeds - Gotham Central #2, Dr. Zeller finds an opportunity to ask her patient why he is so afraid of the Crown of Storms, and Zsasz poetically answers:

“It would show me that life has meaning. Worth. And it doesn’t. I don’t want you to trap me in that lie. I don’t want to-- face it…”

Arkham Is Now A Legitimate Haven Of Rehabilitation, Wildly Enough

Kind of surprisingly, Dr. Zeller responds by saying the Crown of Storms is a voluntary treatment and that she would never force it on anyone, though she believes it could help Zsasz. If this is true, and no fiendish villain had to undergo this specific treatment if they chose not to, it implies a couple different things: firstly, it confirms that not every villain who’s apprehended and locked up in Arkham Towers is guaranteed to be rehabilitated, as there are surely more characters like Zsasz who would actively decline it; and secondly, it suggests that Joker’s own Crown of Storms treatment was accepted willingly and voluntarily, even when he could have refused it.

If the Crown of Storms is as revolutionary as it seems, Dr. Zeller will likely have the biggest target painted on her back, as she’s officially a bigger threat than Batman in terms of recidivism and crime-fighting. That said, if none of DC Comics’ worst criminals ever have to take it, maybe it won’t be as powerful a tool as it could be.
