Disney+'s Upcoming Sci-Fi Fantasy Series Will Rewrite A 33-Year-Old Franchise
If there are two genres that consistently dominate Disney+’s growing library, it’s sci-fi and fantasy. From the galaxy-spanning stories of Star Wars to the interconnected storytelling of the MCU, the platform has built a reputation on expansive, imaginative worlds. Now, Disney+ is turning its attention to another iconic property - Power Rangers.
Plot specifics and casting details are being kept tightly under wraps, but one thing is already clear: Disney and Hasbro’s Power Rangers reboot is a far more extensive overhaul than simply focusing on a new team and theme. The franchise may be built on reinvention, but the Disney+ show will be the most radical Power Rangers transformation yet.
The Disney+ Power Rangers Reboot Is Wiping The Slate Clean
Disney And Hasbro Are Hitting The Reset Button For The Rangers
Reinvention has always been part of Power Rangers’ DNA. The franchise began with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers before transitioning into Power Rangers Zeo, setting a precedent for change early on. Each subsequent Power Rangers season introduced new teams, themes, and aesthetics, ensuring that the series never stayed static for long.
In addition to the shakeups across individual seasons, Power Rangers has gone through multiple creative eras. Ownership shifts, from Saban to Disney, then to Nickelodeon, and eventually to Hasbro, have shaped the show’s tone and direction across decades. Despite these changes, however, the franchise has always maintained a shared continuity, loosely connecting dozens of seasons of storytelling.
That’s what makes the upcoming Disney+ Power Rangers series so significant. Rather than building on existing lore, the new show is reportedly abandoning it entirely. This isn’t just a new team of Rangers or a fresh storyline. It’s a full-scale reboot that disconnects itself from over 30 years of canon.
This approach allows the rebooted Power Rangers on Disney+ to redefine everything from the ground up. Iconic elements like the Morphin Grid, Zords, and the Rangers’ origins can be reimagined without the constraints of having to adhere to existing continuity. It’s a bold move given how beloved Power Rangers continues to be, but one that could seriously pay off.
Breaking from continuity won’t be the only change, as there will also be tonal shift that’s just as important. Early reports suggest the new Power Rangers will lean into a more mature, serialized narrative style. Rather than episodic battles and monster-of-the-week plots, the Disney+ reboot could resemble prestige sci-fi fantasy series, designed to appeal to both longtime fans and new audiences.
Power Rangers Is Long Overdue An Overhaul
The Franchise Has Needed To Evolve For A While
At first glance, a full reboot might seem unnecessary or even confusing. After all, Power Rangers has thrived for decades by constantly reinventing itself. Each new season has offered a fresh take, whether through new characters, settings, or themes, allowing the franchise to stay fresh without abandoning its roots.
However, that approach has also become its biggest limitation. While the surface-level changes kept the series going, the underlying formula remained largely unchanged. Over time, the underlying structure and tonal feel of even the most recent iterations of Power Rangers began to feel increasingly outdated.
The gap between Power Rangers and modern TV shows has only widened in recent years. Shows like Stranger Things and The Mandalorian have redefined audience expectations for cross-age-range sci-fi fantasy storytelling, emphasizing character development, cinematic production values, and long-form narratives.
By contrast, the most recent installment, Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, struggled to fully break away from the franchise’s traditional format. While it introduced new ideas, it still carried the structural DNA of a show designed for a much younger audience.
That’s why now is the perfect moment for a complete overhaul. The franchise has been absent from live-action television since 2023, creating a natural break that allows for reinvention. Without the pressure of maintaining continuity, Disney+ has the opportunity to rebuild Power Rangers for a new era.
What’s more, letting go of the old formula doesn’t mean abandoning what made Power Rangers special. Unless Disney and Hasbro seriously drop the ball, the spirit of the franchise will remain intact. Instead, a reboot offers a chance to reinterpret those core ideas in a way that resonates with modern audiences. For Power Rangers, a creative overhaul isn’t just an option, it’s a necessity.
Rebuilding Power Rangers From Scratch Isn’t A Choice For Disney & Hasbro
The End Of Super Sentai Has Helped Force A New Beginning
While the decision to reboot Power Rangers completely rather than just continue the story with a fresh team may seem like a bold creative gamble for Hasbro and Disney, it’s also a practical necessity. Ever since it debuted with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in the early 90s, the franchise has relied heavily on footage from Japan’s Super Sentai, adapting action sequences and costumes for Western audiences.
Essentially, the show has always taken the footage of Zords, the iconic Power Rangers costumes, and the wild range of wacky monsters from the Japanese series. This approach is what allowed the various studios behind the franchise to produce high-energy action on a relatively modest budget. It also shaped the structure of the series, as storylines were naturally built around the pre-existing Sentai footage.
However, that model is no longer sustainable. With Super Sentai having now ended after over 50 years on the air, Power Rangers has lost its primary source of material. For the first time in its history, Power Rangers must create everything from scratch, from action sequences to costume design.
For obvious reasons, this shift fundamentally changes how the Power Rangers Disney+ show is produced. Without Super Sentai as a foundation, continuing the existing continuity would require a massive creative overhaul anyway. In that context, a full reboot becomes the more logical choice.
Starting fresh allows Disney and Hasbro to design a version of Power Rangers that’s tailored specifically for modern audiences and production standards. It will also remove the restraint that came with adapting Super Sentai and trying to build storylines around reels of bombastic footage from the Japanese show, giving the new creative team complete control over the series’ direction.
In many ways, rebooting Power Rangers from the ground up represents both a challenge and an opportunity. The end of Super Sentai closes one chapter in Power Rangers history, but it also opens the door for the franchise to finally become something entirely its own when it finds its new home on Disney+.
