DWTS' Jenna Johnson Reacts to Carrie Ann Inaba's New Lift Rule Pitch
DWTS' Carrie Ann Inaba Breaks Silence on Val Chmerkovskiy’s Suspension
Jenna Johnson isn't afraid to revise her ballroom playbook.
After Carrie Ann Inaba criticized her and partner Harry Shum Jr. for adding "a lift" to their samba routine during Oct. 13's Super Bowl Night episode, the Dancing With the Stars pro reacted to the judge's recommendation that the show enforce a clearer policy on the move.
"We should," Johnson exclusively told E! News after the Oct. 27 Halloween episode alongside Shum Jr. "I would love that. That would be amazing. I think that it would help all of us pros. I also saw that comment, and I really appreciated it."
Inaba didn't dance around her feelings about their routine two weeks ago, during which she accused them of including the prohibited move. She read the definition aloud during the episode as "any movement during which one of the dancers has both feet off the floor at the same time with the assistance or support of their partner."
And while she stayed mostly mum about the fallout—which included Val Chmerkovskiy's one-week suspension from DWTS—Inaba broke her silence ahead of the Halloween Night episode, confirming she and Johnson buried the hatchet. She also shared her recommendation for future seasons of the dance competition.
"A new lift rule should be created for next season," she wrote in an Oct. 25 Instagram comment under her own post. "I think a session with all the dancers and the judges in a room together to discuss the history of how and why Len Goodman, our original producers and I defined the lift rule and what the purpose is, which is safety and fairness."

"The show has evolved tremendously, the way the show is cast has also changed, and so has our audience and the way they consume the show," she continued. "Working together to create a better understanding between the dancers and the judges and our audience is important to me, as we move forward and is something I have asked for."
Her critique initially left some DWTS fans scratching their heads, since Inaba's definition said the prohibited move involved the celeb's partner, while the Grey's Anatomy actor was lifted by the troupe.
The incident only devolved further when Johnson's husband—partnered with Jenna Dewan this season—made an unsavory reference to the infamous Oscars moment between Will Smith and Chris Rock in a TikTok post. (The comment led to his one-week suspension, and The Rookie star moved and grooved with Alan Bersten for Dedication Night.)

With Super Bowl Night behind them, Shum Jr. and Johnson are more focused on celebrating their perfect score for their spooky routine, especially with legendary dancer Shirley Ballas guest-judging.
"We don't do this show for validation, but that was the best validation of having someone like her to get the feedback and talk about kind of what she loved about it," the Glee alum, still donning his blood-soaked clothes, told E!. "But we weren't expecting it."
"I know how much it means to you," he said to Johnson, "also for me, as someone who came late to the game, like watching Shirley on Next Pro, and then going back and watching her videos, I'm like, 'Oh my god!'"

I made myself a bowl of pasta and a glass of red wine and I redid my vision board for the year. Dancing With the Stars was already on it from the year before. However, I added five more Dancing With the Stars on the board."
