The dream of playing a Final Fantasy MMORPG on mobile devices is dead once again. Today, the Final Fantasy 14 Mobile team announced that service for the currently operating Chinese version of the game will be terminated in the coming months and that, furthermore, development on a global release will cease entirely. Final Fantasy 14 Mobile will have been in service for just over a year at the time of its closing.

The mobile port's developer, Tencent subsidiary LightSpeed Studios, made the official announcement on the game's blog. In an announcement on the game's news blog, the developer explained the reason for the termination by writing that "Tencent and Square Enix have, through amicable negotiation, decided to terminate the licensing agreement." The announcement also cites "adjustments in business operations and changes in the market environment." Final Fantasy 14 Mobile was released in June 2025. LightSpeed Studios has set Sept. 30, 2026 as the day when game operations will cease. Effective today, the developer has also halted new user registrations and microtransactions.

Final Fantasy 14 Mobile was first revealed in 2024 as a free-to-play adaptation of Square Enix's massively popular MMO with microtransactions. Instead of just putting Final Fantasy 14 on Android and iOS, the port aimed to recreate the story and gameplay mechanics of the full game in a way suitable for mobile devices. The game featured nine playable jobs at launch, and over the course of its first year covered roughly the entirety of A Realm Reborn's plot.

This is yet another mobile live-service title that Square Enix has shuttered in recent years. Earlier this month, the company also announced that Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis would be ending service this October. Some Square Enix live-service titles have been given new life in the form of console ports, such as the upcoming Final Fantasy Resonance, which adapts the shutdown game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius.

Warriors of Light still have a lot to get excited about in the coming months, with the MMO's next expansion, Evercold, on the horizon. The game's seventh expansion is set to be released next January, and Square Enix will share a ton of new information on what fans can look forward to at the Berlin Fan Fest later this month. The loss of Final Fantasy 14 Mobile may not turn out to be that big of a deal for the MMO, as the prospect of playing a complex game that requires precisely timed inputs in battle sounds fairly daunting. It can be hard to hit your rotations on a controller or keyboard. I can't imagine what it is like on a touchscreen. Interestingly enough, Square Enix had previously planned on releasing a mobile port of Final Fantasy 11, the other MMO in the series. This was eventually canceled in 2021.
