Ewan is Deputy Editor for ScreenRant's gaming section. He still quite hasn’t gotten out of his mid 00’s emo phase, and knows more about The Legend of Zelda and Doctor Who than is probably healthy.

Ewan oversees the content operation of ScreenRant's gaming output, working with a talented team of writers and editors to cover everything from the latest GTA 6 news to the indie games you need on your radar.

Former Editor of GAMINGbible, Ewan also has words at Kotaku, Den of Geek, NME, and UNILAD. He's appeared on various podcasts, including VGC's and BBC's Let's Talk About Tech.

Sony has officially announced that you'll be able to access PlayStation Plus for free starting this weekend, although you won't have forever. Given all the other announcements PlayStation has made recently, it's nice to see something a little more positive.

If you've been paying attention to all the latest gaming news (hopefully here on ScreenRant), you'll know PlayStation has officially announced it plans to stop producing discs from January 2028 and move into an all-digital future. Between this and the ongoing price increases, it's fair to say 2026 hasn't been the best year for Sony. Then again, it's pretty much the same story across the board.

As such, you'd think a little free PlayStation Plus might help cheer everyone up a bit. Over on the PlayStation X account, they confirmed that from July 3 to July 5 you'll be able to access online multiplayer without the need for a PlayStation Plus subscription. Unfortunately, this only seems to have served as a reminder to many that having to pay a subscription fee to play games online is outrageous. Sometimes you just can't win, can you?

Ostensibly, this particular PlayStation Plus free weekend is so players can take EA Sports FC 26 online as the World Cup continues to insist upon us all. It's not just limited to the football sim, however. You'll be able to take any game online during the period, regardless of your PlayStation Plus subscriber status.

Unfortunately, this free weekend is only limited to the online multiplayer aspect of PlayStation Plus. You won't be able to use this weekend to dive into the library of free games, which is soon to contain Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – Cross-Gen Bundle, For the King 2, and CrossCode.

As PlayStation continues to edge towards an all-digital future, gamers are becoming more and more concerned about rising costs. Senior Director at Sony Interactive Entertainment Sid Shuman said in an official statement: "This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today,"

Given digital ownership remains an incredible point of contention for consumers (spoiler, you technically don't own a digital game). PlayStation is going to have to do something spectacular to win player confidence back. Free PlayStation Plus for a year, anyone?
