Glen Powell’s R-Rated Series Nearly Doubles Season 1’s Rotten Tomatoes Score

While Powell is known for starring in movies like Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone But You, Twisters, Hit Man, and The Running Man, he has also been in several television series. This includes his prominent roles as Chad Radwell in Scream Queens and Dave in Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, along with being in episodes of Rick and Morty, Family Guy, Robot Chicken, NCIS, and CSI: Miami.

Now, Powell's other show, Chad Powers, has returned for season 2, and debuted to a perfect 100% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. Since this is only based on nine reviews, the score may change as more are added. As of this writing, though, it comes close to doubling season 1's 60% score, marking a drastic turn in the show's reception.

In ScreenRant's Chad Powers season 2 review, Felipe Rangel gave it a rating of nine out of 10 stars. By comparison, ScreenRant's season 1 rating was six out of 10 stars. Rangel praised how season 2's "comedy shifts into a comedy-thriller hybrid" and that the change in genre "works perfectly in the show's favor. Chad Powers has never been better, and it is a sign that the show will always be open to experimentation."

FandomWire's M.N. Miller notes in his review that the show has evolved for the better while celebrating how "Glen Powell’s committed performance, genuine character growth, and surprising comic chops turn a disposable gimmick into an increasingly engaging redemption story."

Along with the aforementioned well-received changes, Vulture's Nicolas Quah notes that "freed from the burden of having to introduce its preposterous setup, the show can indulge its freakier impulses, finally arriving at the place it always seemed to want to be."

In addition to the stark contrast in how critics are responding to the show, the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes has also improved, though not quite as drastically. Season 2 has a 93% score after season 1 received 84%. Many of the season 2 audience reviews commend the show's humor and ability to be unpredictable, on top of Powell getting recognition for his performance.

Some of the audience reviews mention the enjoyment of binge-watching season 2. This is due to a change in the release model, as after a two-episode premiere, season 1 debuted new episodes on a weekly basis. Season 2 went the route of releasing all six episodes at once, a decision that appears to be paying off, especially with the show being third worldwide and second in the U.S. on the Disney+ and Hulu streaming charts.

The series follows Russ Holliday (Powell), a disgraced former college football quarterback who disguises himself as an individual named Chad Powers in order to join a new team. Along with playing the titular character, Powell co-created the show with Michael Waldron and serves as an executive producer.

Waldron has previously spoken about a three-season plan for Chad Powers. Another season has not been officially announced yet, but the noticeably improved reception can only help make this happen.

Along with Powell, the cast of Chad Powers also features Perry Mattfeld as Ricky Hudson, Steven Zahn as Jake Hudson, Quentin Plair as Coach Byrd, Wynn Everett as Tricia, Frankie Rodriguez as Danny Cruz, and Toby Huss as Mike Holliday.
