God Of War Laufey Release Date Is Sooner Than You Think

Santa Monica closed out PlayStation’s latest State of Play with the official reveal of God of War Laufey. This mainline, Faye-led God of War game was unfortunately leaked long before its announcement, with fans knowing that it would indeed feature the franchise’s deceased Jötunheim Giant, wife, and mother as its playable protagonist. Still, it had not been predetermined when the story would take place and what it would entail.

Interestingly, this 20-minute God of War Laufey gameplay reveal confirmed that its narrative runs parallel to the events of God of War and God of War Ragnarök, rather than it being a prequel to those games. It could also be theorized that God of War Laufey is far along in development due to its confidence in sharing such a sizable chunk at the State of Play, and that’s since been reinforced by none other than Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier.

No release date for God of War Laufey was given, nor did PlayStation grace fans with a release window. Fortunately, Schreier stated on Bluesky that he doesn’t think there’s any reason to fret, and seems sure that God of War Laufey “*isn’t* years away” like “a lot of other big announcements” are—Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, possibly.

This is obviously great to hear, as it suggests there are plans to launch God of War Laufey as early as 2027. Meanwhile, there are plenty of games that do not currently have a release date or window that were announced a lot longer ago, so God of War Laufey being revealed and potentially subsequently released within a year would be one of the most satisfying reveal-to-release pipelines in recent memory for a big-budget first-party PlayStation game.

Santa Monica’s plate is stacked high with its classic Greek God of War trilogy remake and God of War Laufey, as well as whatever else the studio might be working on that we haven’t heard about yet, and it only recently shadow-dropped an unprecedented first foray into 2D Metroidvania games via God of War Sons of Sparta. God of War Laufey is more of the same cinematic, no-cuts, over-the-shoulder style that has become a signature of God of War’s Norse mythology era, but it is no less thrilling and is likely to be Santa Monica’s next release.
