Halo 2: Project Cartographer Is Available Right Now

There's no doubt that the Halo franchise has been rejuvenated by the release of Campaign Evolved, which brought the first game back in an entirely new light. That was restricted to single-player, and a lot of those who picked it up at launch have now finished most of what it has to offer.

As such, many are looking for a new experience in the same universe, and the answer might actually be to go back to the second game in the series. It's one of the greatest games of all time in its own right and now a newer version should do more than enough to thrust it into relevance once again.

Over on Twitter/X, the user TiredAndOnFire shared a post detailing the latest release for the Halo 2 Project Cartographer project. If you're yet to be introduced to it in earnest, Project Cartographer essentially brings back multiplayer functionality to the game, as well as adding a bunch of bells and whistles that bring the playing experience more into line with modern expectations.

"I PRESENT TO YOU... Halo 1 and HALO 2 Project Cartographer! It's been revitalized! Multiplayer functionality is RESTORED, adds modern fixes, HD resolutions, and community features! Bonuses like OSTs, Strategy Guides, Novels, Web Series and many more are included as well. Celebrate the release of Halo Campaign evolved this month with a revival of the franchise!!"

As well as fixes to bugs that have remained in Halo 2 since launch, the release also includes HD textures and visual improvements that should make the classic a little less jarring to return to, given the graphics of the modern day.

Not only that, but the download also removes the always annoying Games for Windows Live software, which often stood in the way of returning to older games long after support for that service ended.

At the same time, there is also a dedicated server browser with plenty of players currently online, meaning you shouldn't have too much trouble joining a game if you fancy getting those old-school collaterals one more time.

In even better news, the download is available entirely for free via the official Project Cartographer website, though you will want to make sure that you have a legitimate copy of the game at home just to keep everything above board from a legal perspective.

As for what is going on with the series moving forward, the fate of the next mainline single-player game remains firmly in the shadows. That said, we do know Halo 2 is the next target for the remake treatment thanks to a fun little Easter egg at the end of a legendary completion in Campaign Evolved. It doesn't have a release date just yet, but it shouldn't require as long of a development cycle as an entirely original game would.
