How Sony Went From Camera-Industry Outsider to a Full Frame Mirrorless Leader in About a Decade
In 2005, if you asked a working photographer to name a Sony stills camera, you would get a shrug and maybe a Cyber-shot pointed at you. Sony had no professional lens line, no professional autofocus heritage, and no seat at a table Canon and Nikon had set for themselves decades earlier. A little over ten years later, Sony was selling the most talked-about full-frame mirrorless cameras on the market, and both of its rivals were scrambling to answer.
The Company Sony Bought Its Way In With
Sony did not build its camera credibility from nothing. It bought it. The story starts with Minolta, which in February 1985 shipped the Maxxum 7000, the first 35mm SLR to put both autofocus and motorized film advance inside the body. That was a genuine landmark, the camera that made autofocus normal, and it gave Minolta the lens mount that would eventually become Sony's A-mount.
It also cost the company dearly. Honeywell claimed Minolta had lifted its patented autofocus work, sued, and won. In February 1992, a jury ordered Minolta to pay Honeywell $96.35 million; the case was subsequently settled for $127.5 million, including prejudgment interest. Minolta merged with Konica in 2003, and in January 2006 Konica Minolta announced it was leaving the camera business entirely, transferring certain DSLR-related assets to Sony.
That handoff is the part people forget. Sony did not just license a mount. Through the transfer of Minolta's digital SLR assets, it gained the A-mount system, Minolta's in-body stabilization technology, and key parts of the DSLR development pipeline. In June 2006, barely months later, Sony introduced its first Alpha DSLR, the A100, a 10.2-megapixel APS-C body with sensor-shift stabilization built straight on Minolta's bones.
The A-Mount Years and a Bet on Mirrorless
For a while, Sony did the obvious thing. It made A-mount DSLRs and tried to fight Canon and Nikon on their own ground. Some were good. The A900 in 2008 was Sony's first full-frame DSLR, a 24.6-megapixel body that showed the company could build a serious camera. Then came the translucent-mirror SLT line, the A55 and later the full-frame A99, which kept the mirror fixed and sent light to both the sensor and the autofocus module at once.
None of it dethroned anyone. Canon and Nikon owned the professional DSLR market through habit, glass, and service networks that took decades to build, and a clever mirror trick was not going to change that. So Sony placed a different bet. In May 2010 it launched the NEX-3 and NEX-5, tiny interchangeable-lens cameras with APS-C sensors and no mirror at all, built around a brand-new E-mount. The E-mount's short flange distance and all-electronic design were the actual long game. Sony was learning to build a camera with no mirror box in the way, and it kept the sensor as the center of the system.
The a7 That Changed the Math
On October 16, 2013, Sony announced the a7 and a7R, the first full-frame mirrorless cameras built around autofocus and an electronic viewfinder, distinct from Leica's earlier full-frame rangefinders. Both used the E-mount, now paired with a new line of full-frame FE lenses. The a7 carried a 24.3-megapixel sensor and sold for $1,699 for the body or $1,999 with a 28-70mm kit lens. The a7R stepped up to a 36.4-megapixel sensor with no optical low-pass filter and cost $2,299.
The pitch was simple and a little shocking at the time. You could put a full-frame sensor in a body smaller and lighter than any full-frame DSLR, and you could adapt almost any lens ever made onto that short mount. The early cameras had rough edges. The FE lens lineup was thin, battery life was poor, and the handling divided people. But the direction was set, and no DSLR could answer the size argument without throwing away the mirror that defined it. The a7R in particular showed where this was going, packing more resolution into a smaller body than Sony's own flagship DSLR had managed.
Then Sony did the thing that actually built the lead. It iterated fast, in public, and fixed the complaints on a schedule Canon and Nikon were not built to match. The a7 II arrived in late 2014 as the first full-frame camera of any kind with five-axis in-body stabilization, which meant every adapted lens you hung off that short mount suddenly held steady. The a7R II followed in 2015 with the first back-illuminated full-frame sensor, 42.4 megapixels of it, the same sensor-fab trick that had spread through smartphones now scaled up to full frame. Each generation closed a gap and opened a new lead, on a fast and steady cadence, while the DSLR makers refreshed flagships on a much slower one.
The Sensor Business Nobody Could Match
The camera bodies get the attention, but the real reason Sony pulled ahead sits one layer down. Sony makes image sensors at a scale no camera company can touch. In June 2008 it announced the development of a back-illuminated CMOS sensor, and in 2009 it began mass-producing the technology under the Exmor R name, moving the wiring behind the light-collecting layer so that more light could reach the pixels. Later came the stacked Exmor RS design, which added a separate processing layer under the pixels for far faster readout.
That technology was paid for by a business most photographers never see. Sony Semiconductor runs enormous fabs in Kyushu, and the smartphone market funds the whole operation. Sony's own 2025 corporate report forecast a 56 percent share of the global image sensor market by revenue. The sensor in your iPhone is very likely a Sony part, and so are the sensors in cameras from Nikon, Fujifilm, and others.
Sit with what that means for a camera business. Sony's control of both sensor development and camera design gave it unusually close access to new sensor technology and greater control over product schedules. Nikon, one of its direct rivals, often had to buy Sony silicon to build its competing bodies. Canon designs and fabricates its own sensors, which kept it independent but also meant it had to match Sony's research budget alone. The company with no professional interchangeable-lens still-camera heritage in 2005 turned out to hold the one asset the whole industry runs on.
The a9 and a7 III, and the Answer From Canon and Nikon
Two cameras turned Sony's momentum into a rout. The first was the a9, announced on April 19, 2017, at $4,499. It used the world's first stacked full-frame sensor, and it shot 20 frames per second with no viewfinder blackout, ran a silent electronic shutter up to 1/32,000 second, and covered the frame with 693 phase-detection autofocus points. That was aimed straight at the Canon 1D X Mark II and Nikon D5, the mirrored flagships that ruled sports and news photography. For the first time, a mirrorless camera was not a compromise for that work. It was better, and it started showing up on the sidelines of stadiums that had been solid walls of white and black Canon and Nikon glass for a generation.
The second was the a7 III, released in early 2018 at $1,998. Sony called it the basic model, then handed it a 24-megapixel back-illuminated sensor, the a9's 693-point autofocus, 10 frames per second, dual card slots, and in-body stabilization. It overdelivered so badly for the price that reviewers spent months calling it the default full-frame camera to buy. The trickle-down of professional features into a two-thousand-dollar body is the moment the rest of the industry could no longer wait.
So they moved. Nikon revealed the Z6 and Z7 in August 2018, its first full-frame mirrorless cameras on a new Z-mount. Canon followed in September with the EOS R at $2,299 on its new RF mount. Both landed with mixed reviews and thin lens lineups, exactly the growing pains Sony had suffered five years earlier. Sony had owned the full-frame mirrorless field with no answer from Canon or Nikon for nearly half a decade, long enough to be two generations ahead in autofocus and lens choice by the time anyone else showed up. The a9 and the a7 III did not just sell well. They set the terms every competitor now had to meet.
What the Lead Actually Bought
The race has tightened since. Canon held onto the top spot in overall interchangeable-lens camera shipments, Nikon's Z system matured into something genuinely competitive, and Sony no longer walks the segment unopposed. Market leadership at any single moment is a slippery thing, and full-frame mirrorless is now a crowded fight rather than a Sony showcase.
What has not changed is who defined the format. Nearly every full-frame maker now builds mirrorless cameras with on-sensor phase detection and electronic viewfinders, which is to say they build the camera Sony argued for in 2013 while Canon and Nikon were still selling mirrors. Open a working photographer's bag today and the odds are good you will find a Sony body, or a rival body running a sensor fabricated in a Sony plant in Kyushu. A company with no professional stills-camera name twenty years ago wrote the blueprint for full-frame mirrorless that the whole industry copied, and it did it on Minolta's engineering and a chip line that answers to smartphones. The current a7R V sitting on a store shelf, built on Sony's own E-mount, is the direct descendant of the camera business a film-camera company gave up on in 2006.
