Inside Oscar Isaac and Elvira Lind’s Unbreakable Love Story

"I was forced to be at this party, and I went dressed as Llewyn," the 47-year-old recalled to NPR in 2013. "It was a month before shooting. And then I was sitting in the corner just eating. I was the only person eating at the party. And this girl who ended up, she's a documentary filmmaker, so obviously she spotted the weirdo and went directly to that one. And sat with me and talked to me for a long time. And I guess she liked the whole thing."

So much so that Isaac and Lind became partners not only in life but also in work, with him appearing in her 2013 musician portrait series Staircase Sessions. Still, the two kept their romance mostly out of the spotlight for the next few years—making their red carpet debut at the 2015 SXSW premiere of his movie Ex Machina and kissing after he won a Golden Globe for his performance in Show Me a Hero in 2016.

It was also the year Isaac was announced as the lead role in the New York Public Theater production of Hamlet. Amid his preparations for the Shakespearean tragedy, Lind discovered that she was pregnant with their first child. But before she could tell Isaac, they were hit with more news: his mom Eugenia was battling a serious illness that was later diagnosed as cancer.

"After a couple of hours of us both pacing up and down the apartment not knowing what to do, and me not knowing how to now share the news about my pregnancy, I eventually manage to whisper it to him. Like a shy child on her first day of school," Lind wrote in a 2022 essay for Talkhouse. "We sit on the terrace, in the last moments of the day's sun, holding the best and the worst news at the same time."

And "for the next year," she continued, "only three things happen in our life. Hamlet, Oscar's mom's fight against an aggressive cancer, and the baby who had decided to join us in the midst of this turmoil."

Eugenia died in February 2017 and Isaac and Lind tied the knot shortly after in what she called a "shotgun wedding with a handful of people on some friends' roof." Their son Eugene (named after Isaac’s late mother) was born that April and Isaac starred in Hamlet from June to September.

As for their decision to wed when they did, there were "tons of reasons," the Stars Wars alum noted to GQ Style in 2018. “She's Danish—she's not a citizen, and she was very pregnant, and there was an element of figuring out ‘Well, where are we going to be?' And us wanting to be a family unit a bit more.”

And while Isaac argued Danes have different views on marriage and that it "itself becomes less important," he continued, the couple decided to take the plunge after everything they'd gone through together.

"At the time, right before it happened, my mom was ill, and so I saw her carrying my child, bathing my sick mom—seeing her do that, I just thought: 'I want to be with this person forever and ever,'" he added. "And I just wanted to take that extra step as well."

Lind had already been filming Isaac’s preparations for Hamlet when she found out about her pregnancy and Eugenia’s illness, which led to the documentary King Hamlet released in 2025.

Theater "is sort of ephemeral and is meant to show up and go, and the fact that this document exists in that way is a miracle,” the Scenes From a Marriage star said about the Oscar-nominated documentarian at the DOC NYC documentary festival in November, per People. But as he added, “really, the miracle is that Elvira came into my life. And that she does what she does, which is, she never runs away from the sharp edges of life. She doesn't try to sand them down.”

As for the scenes in Isaac and Lind’s marriage today, they continue to work together both personally —including adding son Mads to their family in October 2019—and professionally, such as launching their production company Mad Gene Media that same year.

"We’re always collaborating,” the 44-year-old told Variety in March. "It’s been this way since we’ve met. We’re always reading each other things and brainstorming. Two creative souls, or what have you, that will always be part of our relationship."
