Warning: This article includes SPOILERS for Margo's Got Money Troubles season 1!

Apple TV’s hit series Margo’s Got Money Troubles was already fantastic in season 1, but season 2 will officially be better. The dramedy, based on the book by Rufi Thorpe, introduces us to the messy and lovable Margo Millet, played by Elle Fanning, who starts doing OnlyFans to support her newborn son after an unexpected pregnancy with her English professor. For the most part, the show benefited from the changes to the book version of Margo’s Got Money Troubles. There’s a reason why it holds a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has been labeled a “masterpiece” by many.

However, one major change disappointed fans. Margo’s Got Money Troubles omitted JB, Margo’s love interest. In the book, JB reaches out through OnlyFans, paying her money to answer personal questions. This quickly becomes a two-sided exchange. Their relationship develops over time, becoming flirty and then romantic. The storyline is not only a super compelling part of the book, but it also disproves every character who told her that no man would ever want to be with her if she did OnlyFans. It’s critical to the book’s message, pushing back on the incorrect and stigmatizing narrative that sex workers are unlovable.

The only reference they make to JB is a small Easter egg. Margo receives a $1350 tip in the final scene of Margo’s Got Money Troubles season 1 from JB. It seemed like a nice nod to the beloved storyline they took out. Because Apple TV promoted the show as a limited series, that’s all it seemed to be. Now that Margo’s Got Money Troubles is renewed for season 2, the moment is the first introduction to the character who will officially appear in the sophomore outing.

Before the renewal announcement, Elle Fanning teased to interviewer Ethan Alter that “if we get a season 2, fingers crossed, maybe Margo can find love” (via Instagram). Since then, the creative team has repeatedly hinted that JB will appear in Margo’s Got Money Troubles season 2. In an interview with Gold Derby, Eva Anderson, season 1 executive producer and season 2 co-showrunner, teased the introduction of JB, advising people to “Maybe check out who leaves Margaret the big tip in the final scene and what his initials are.

Similarly, both executive producer/star Elle Fanning and David E. Kelley have discussed that they wanted to give every character and storyline enough time, including JB. Now, they have the chance to do that for the book romance. Elle Fanning told The Hollywood Reporter this:

I think we always knew it felt a little crowded, but we did try. In the hopes for a second season, it felt like something to save for later. You want to give Margo her time because you have to introduce everyone in the first season, and you want viewers to fall in love with the characters. There was a lot that Margo was going through. We’re throwing a lot of obstacles at her. We had to give it all the proper time.

Similarly, David E. Kelley mentioned having to make hard decisions about what to include in the interview with Gold Derby. When it came to the JB romance, he said this:

"We had an embarrassment of riches in the book, and we could service most of the stories, but not all of them. JB's story is a big one that we didn't want to truncate, and it gives us a great place to go in Season 2. We haven't forgotten it!"

As a big fan of the book and TV show, these quotes excite me. When Margo’s Got Money Troubles was just a limited series, the JB removal felt like a serious bummer. Now that we know it will be a series, they made the right call.

The TV show can still relay the idea that sex work doesn’t make anyone less worthy of love or less desirable. But JB and Margo can have breathing room to develop, rather than having their screen time heavily limited. It might not be the sole focus of season 2, but it can be more prevalent. The romance story won’t have to fight to get attention against Margo fighting for custody, a strained mother-daughter relationship, and Nick Offerman's Jinx relapsing.

Margo’s Got Money Troubles Season 2 Still Has To Change 1 Big Part Of Their Romance

Most of JB and Margo’s love story can remain the same, even if it’s introduced in season 2. The back-and-forth questions aren’t locked into a specific time frame. The flirty banter is barely impacted by the bigger story. Even smaller parts of their romance, like Margo pushing him away because of the CPS and court cases, can easily be rewritten. She could push him away because of the responsibility of single parenthood, just as easily, without it changing the larger story. However, Margo’s Got Money Troubles season 2 will need to change a massive moment in their romance.

JB and Margo start their online flirtationship and romance early on in the book. As such, Margo’s doxxing completely alters JB and Margo’s relationship. He didn’t know she’d crafted a fantasy for him in the emails until her actual information was put out on the internet. To him, her lies hurt because he was developing real feelings for her and being genuine with her. To her, her lies protected her from an internet stranger asking personal questions, and her entire OnlyFan is crafted into a fantasy. This drives a temporary wedge between them.

Because Margo was already doxxed in Margo’s Got Money Troubles season 1, they will need to write a new central conflict for the pair. JB and Margo won’t be as interesting to watch if everything is always smooth sailing. The bumps in their relationship are what bring them back together stronger. Luckily, Margo’s Got Money Troubles season 2 is in capable hands, so I trust they will find a good alternative.
