Jim Carrey & WB's The Jetsons Reboot Means A Major Change To The Classic Sci-Fi

That futuristic setting was a major focus of the show, with a playful take on technological advancement—although there were, at times, also deeper implications to the comedic scenes involving future technology, as might be expected of a show from the 1960s. That original show proved popular enough in its own right, but this new movie starring Carrey won't be the first reboot. In the 1990s, yet another Jetsons reboot movie was created, Jetsons: The Movie, and it interestingly brought back many of the original cast members, including the voices of George Jetson (George O'Hanlon) and Jane Jetson (Penny Singleton).

Yet, Carrey's Jetsons movie reboot will clearly be very different, not only because it is now even further into the future (shockingly, we're actually closer to the original futuristic date than we are to the original release date), but also because this will be a live-action installment. Knowing that, as well as the fact that Carrey will be playing family patriarch George, there is a very obvious change to the original story already, and it will be interesting to see how that plays out in the upcoming movie.

Jim Carrey Is Very Different From George Jetson In The Jetsons

When it was announced that Carrey is starring in a live-action Jetsons movie, there was excitement from fans of the original series and of Carrey, but there was also a fair bit of surprise in response to this casting decision, for good reason. Specifically, many were caught off guard and perhaps even a little concerned about the decision to cast Carrey in the role of George because of how different he is from the original character. Most notable, perhaps, is the difference in their ages. In the original show, George is about 40 years old. Carrey, however, is currently 64.

That age difference will presumably have some story implications, as it's unlikely that the movie could realistically position Carrey's George as about 25 years younger (especially by the time they begin filming) than the actor is. In addition to that, though, Carrey's typical performance style is quite dissimilar from the characterization of George Jetson in the original show, which depicts the father as relatively bland most of the time, although he is clearly a father who cares about his family. Carrey, by comparison, is best known for his over-the-top portrayals of various characters.

Jim Carrey Is Still A Great Choice For The Jetsons Reboot

At present, most details about this Jetsons reboot movie are being kept under wraps, which means that questions about how Carrey's age may change the story and what other character changes (to George and otherwise) might be made remain anyone's guess. Even so, it seems safe to assume that Carrey will be brilliant in the role. The star has proven time and again that he is able to bring unexpected characters to life in ways that actually prove incredibly popular. One great example is his portrayal of the Grinch in the 2000 live-action movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

There are countless ways that this movie could have gone horribly wrong and seemed goofy in the worst way, but instead, it became a cult classic Christmas movie that continues to be a fan favorite every holiday season. Surely, if Jim Carrey can make the story of a lonely, misunderstood green creature running around, chewing on glass, and convincing children to run with chainsaws work, then he can successfully bring the beloved sci-fi classic The Jetsons to life in a new live-action movie.
