Yellowstone's Kelsey Asbille is straying from the ranch.
While Kelsey Asbille has not appeared on either the big or small screens since the final episode of Yellowstone aired in 2024, Deadline has announced that she has boarded her first new project since her character was killed off. She has joined The Kellys, Thunder Road's star-studded action movie that is currently in production and is set for a worldwide streaming release via Amazon MGM Studios. The cast of the movie already includes Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games, The Witcher) and action icon Arnold Schwarzenegger (The Terminator, Predator).
The movie, which follows an NYPD officer being forced to team up with his estranged family to rescue his wife from a hostage situation, was co-written by Tze Chun (a television writer known for Gotham and Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai) and the movie's director, Brad Peyton (of the Dwayne Johnson movies Rampage, San Andreas, and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island). The character that Asbille will be playing is currently unknown.
This will mark the first major action movie role for Asbille in more than 10 years, since she starred opposite The Royals' William Moseley in 2013's Run. Her only prior action experience was playing a minor role as "Hot Girl" in the 2012 superhero movie The Amazing Spider-Man and appearing in the unaired pilot for a 2014 Egyptian adventure series called Hieroglyph.
Therefore, The Kellys will be Asbille's biggest platform yet for showcasing her ability as an action star. This sees her continuing a habit that has been showcased throughout her career of finding roles in new genres that allow her to show off her range. In fact, when she joined the Yellowstone universe, she had only ever performed in one Western before, namely the Taylor Sheridan movie Wind River, which is where she first collaborated with the Yellowstone creator.
Adding action to her resume makes perfect sense, as she has already proven herself in a wide variety of other genres, including teen drama (One Tree Hill, Teen Wolf), comedy (Pair of Kings), crime drama (Fargo season 4), and horror (Don't Move).
Ultimately, while her character's death makes it unlikely that she will return to the Yellowstone universe, being free of obligation to the Taylor Sheridan franchise could be the best thing for Kelsey Asbille. Should The Kellys connect with streaming audiences and become a major hit, it will establish her even more as a star with a seemingly effortless ability to embrace a wide variety of different types of characters, potentially helping to launch her into even more big projects, in all kinds of genres.
