Leica Introduces a Carbon Fiber-Clad Formula 1® Edition of The Q3 43 for $9,950

Leica partnering with Formula 1 is a first, and unexpected. Why is Leica chasing F1, and what’s the actual benefit of the carbon fiber being used?

The world of motorsport is all about weight reduction to create the fastest possible cars. Carbon fiber is the material of choice, so it’s not surprising to see it being used on this rather sporty-looking special edition Q3 43. My first thought was, like F1 cars, is this special edition Q3 43 built lighter than the regular version?

According to the Leica website, this special edition camera weighs in at 772 g with the battery, which is the same weight as the regular Q3 43. Yet the Formula 1 Edition sports a thumb grip, soft-release button, and handgrip, so we can assume the published weight doesn’t include these accessories. Which means, with the added accessories, it’s going to be heavier.

Other than the added accessories that create a very unique and eye-catching look, the actual camera itself is exactly the same as the regular Q3 43, other than the Microvelour coating that replaces the original gray synthetic leatherette. And an F1 logo on the top plate.

Who Is the Camera For?

The regular Q3 43 costs $7,950. This means you’re paying an additional $2,000 for a thumb grip, wireless-charging handgrip, soft-release button, and branded rope strap. But this matters not. The camera is aimed squarely at luxury collectors and motorsport purists. Money is not a concern.

This Q3 43 Formula 1 Edition comes in a special custom-made presentation box, and like most special editions, I doubt most of the cameras sold will ever leave the box.

If they do, Leica has introduced an exclusive "Formula 1" Leica Look that “captures the atmosphere of the racetrack and brings it directly into the finished image, with greater contrast and saturation.” Leica claims the look’s rendering has been developed “to create a holistic racing experience.” The look can be transferred to the camera via the Leica FOTOS app. This color preset can be applied to JPEGs.

Thoughts

As a Leica Q series fan and owner, I do like the look of this Formula 1 Edition. I prefer the black Microvelour over the gray leatherette, and the red details on the thumb grip and soft-release button are rather stylish. The handgrip features an Arca-Swiss mount, which, ironically for a Formula 1 camera, is unnecessary added weight. Who uses a Q series camera on a tripod?

From a photographer's perspective, this special edition gives us nothing that the regular Q3 43 doesn't, other than added weight, but that’s not the point of these special editions.

This camera makes a luxury fashion statement, and I have to wonder how many we’ll see being used at a Formula 1 event next season? I hope those who buy them actually use them. Underneath the carbon fiber bling is the very best compact camera on the market today. They should be used, not mollycoddled.

The Leica Q3 43 Formula 1 Edition is now available globally at official Leica boutique stores and select prestige retailers. The camera is priced at $9,950 USD / £7,300 GBP / €8,500 EUR. It comes with a branded racing-rope carrying strap in a custom-designed presentation box.
