Marvel Confirms Its Next Avengers Team Name, And It's 10/10 Perfect

The Avengers brand has adapted to different groups of heroes. The Mighty Avengers provided a more conventional counterpart to the main team, while the New Avengers introduced a looser roster built around fresh blood like Spider-Man and Luke Cage, and the Young Avengers created a younger generation with connections to the original team. On the opposite side of the spectrum, the Secret Avengers focused on covert missions and the Dark Avengers placed villains and morally compromised figures into heroic identities. Founded by Hawkeye, the West Coast Avengers established the brand as a regional institution with a different approach to Captain America's team.

Throughout the years, the West Coast Avengers have been home to a long list of famous heroes, including Wonder Man, War Machine, the Maximoff twins, US Agent, and more recently Gwenpool, America Chavez, and Jeff the Land Shark, the latter of whom is assembling his own spin-off squad.

After discarding several groups of variants, Mojo presents his team of alternate versions of famous Marvel heroes in Jeff the Land Shark: Superstar #1. In issue #2, Jeff is saved from a group of sharks by this new team, which assembles under the banner "Jeff Coast Avengers." Dazzlestorm, Katelocke, Elsa Strange, Magikhot, Rambit, and the Mecha Wolverine-Man start their first mission saving the least bombastic of their members, Jeff, who leads the squad in the main cover of Jeff the Land Shark: Superstar #2.

Although eccentric and lighthearted in nature, the Jeff Coast Avengers seem incredibly powerful, especially because most of its line-up boasts the abilities of two major Marvel characters at the same time. Dazzlestorm could channel Storm's lightning through Dazzler's explosive beams of light, Rambit might be able to supercharge any object and fight with the same strength as Rogue and Captain Marvel, Katelocke might combine telepathic attacks with perfect accuracy, and Magikhot could enhance supernatural powers with probability manipulation. In short, the Jeff Coast Avengers may be unironically stronger than most X-Men teams.

Several Famous Characters Have Unexpected Origins

Various characters who now have key recurring roles in the wider Marvel Universe started their journey in stories that seemed too playful, too experimental, or too far removed from mainstream continuity to have lasting consequences. Mayday Parker originated in What If...? #105, which imagined a future where Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson's daughter inherits her father's powers and eventually becomes Spider-Girl. Gwenpool came from an even stranger place: Gwenpool Special #1 presented a woman from a reality where Marvel Comics are fictional, who arrives in the Marvel Universe with an intimate knowledge of its characters.

Other characters, like the Spider-Verse heroes Spider-Ham and Spider-Noir, or the former romance comic star Patsy Walker a.k.a. Hellcat and Howard the Duck, who was introduced as a comedic addition to Adventure Into Fear #19, all made their comic debut on the sidelines of the Marvel Universe before becoming the famous Marvel heroes they are today. The stylishly androgynous Rambit or the ridiculously overpowered Dazzlestorm could eventually join Earth-616 and prove they're more than quirky spins on established Marvel icons with memorable supporting appearances or even comic titles of their own.
