Meghan Markle Addresses Child Sex Abuse Image Allegations Against Dad
Meghan Markle, Prince Harry Make First Joint Public Appearance After U.K. Move
Meghan Markle is speaking out.
After her dad Thomas Markle Sr., 82, was accused of being in possession of child sex abuse images by his son Thomas Markle Jr. in a report published by The Sun Oct. 22, the Duchess of Sussex, 45, has addressed the allegations.
“I am deeply distressed at the news that has come to light in the last 24 hours, and my thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed,” Meghan said in a statement to E! News Oct. 23. “In 2018, a letter was sent to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection. That letter was subsequently shared with me.”
“It made troubling and disturbing allegations against my father,” she added, “and I was given assurances that these were being investigated.”
The royal—who shares two kids with husband Prince Harry—continued, “I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications’ distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children, was for one reason: to protect them.”
Meghan went on to share that she “trusted that the authorities were doing the same for other families.”
“Although the breadth of what has now been uncovered is more sickening than one could ever imagine,” she concluded, “my sincerest hope is that justice will be fully served and that the priority remains the safety and protection of innocent children.”
E! News has reached out to a rep for Thomas Sr., the Philippine National Police PIO as well as the FBI for comment and has not heard back. He has not yet publicly addressed the allegations.
Good Morning Britain
Thomas Jr., 60, told The Sun that he reported his dad to authorities and the FBI in the U.S. after allegedly finding child sex abuse images stored in boxes at his father’s home in the Philippines.
“When I found this material I was horrified and I had no option but to report my dad," Thomas Jr. told the publication. “I have supported, cared for him and helped him for years—but that stops now. I won’t speak to my father ever again unless I’m called to give evidence against him.”
The Duchess of Sussex has notably been estranged from her dad, previously opening up about their fractured relationship.
"There was such an obsession with anything in my world, including tracking down my parents, and I did everything I could to protect both of them in that media frenzy," Meghan—whose mom is Doria Ragland—told Oprah Winfrey in a 2021 interview. "But for over a year, the U.K. tabloids were trying to find my dad, offering people so much money to try to find his address.”
“Once they did, I remember being told, there was a huge headline like, 'We found him' or 'We've got him,'’ she continued. “We're talking about someone's father. And from that point, the tabloids, they moved into the apartment next door and across from him, descended on this small town, giving him gifts.”
As Meghan—whose dad admitted to working with the paparazzi to stage photos—noted at the time, “The whole thing brings us to where we are today."
