The Gundam fandom won’t have to wait long to watch the sci-fi anime series’ latest film at home. Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe is releasing on Netflix later this month. The movie was released in Japanese theaters in January before coming to American cinemas in May. Netflix announced the film’s streaming date alongside a new trailer on Tuesday.

The Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway movies are based on Hathaway’s Flash, a trilogy of light novels written by series creator Yoshiyuki Tomino between 1989 and 1990. They are set in the Universal Century (UC) timeline, the series’ main continuity introduced with the original 1979 anime. Specifically, the Hathaway books are set in UC 0105, 26 years after Mobile Suit Gundam.

Sunrise is adapting the three novels into a trilogy of movies. The first, Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway, was released in June 2021 and is currently streaming on Netflix. The first two films have received a glowing reception, with many describing them as a great entry point into the series. Ideally, it won’t take another five years before the last movie in the trilogy finally releases.

Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe was directed by Shukou Murase (Ergo Proxy, Witch Hunter Robin), who also helmed the previous film. Yasuyuki Muto (100 Meters, Tokyo Revengers) returned to write the screenplay. The legendary Shinichirou Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo,) handled the storyboards. SZA performed the theme song. As usual, Sunrise animated the movie. It will be on Netflix on Aug. 31.

While Sunrise has not given a release window for the final film in the Hathaway trilogy, Gundam fans have plenty of other projects to look forward to in the meantime. Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO was revealed just last month. It’s a new anime set in an alternate post-apocalyptic setting where Mobile Suit pilots battle against an alien menace. The upcoming video game Mobile Suit Rogue Orbit will be set in the same universe, and it looks like a slick action game with heavy shades of Armored Core. Both are slated for 2027.

Other upcoming projects include Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom Zero, a prequel to the film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom. There is also a somewhat controversial live-action Gundam movie in development. All in all, there's a reason that Gundam Day was recently recognized as a holiday in Japan: this series remains very popular.
