Netflix's One Piece Gets First Update Of 2026, And It's The One Every Fan Dreaded

Between the live action and the anime, there's never been a more exciting time to be a One Piece fan than right now. The franchise is expanding its horizons faster than ever before, and many would argue now's the best time to catch up on the decades-long masterpiece. The best part is that gone are the days when the manga and anime were the only introductions to One Piece's story.

Wit Studio’s One Piece Remake Drops Its Most Disappointing Update Yet

Nearly two years after the initial announcement and a year after the last update, Netflix recently shared a new teaser for Wit Studio's THE ONE PIECE. The teaser in question features a smattering of character design sheets for the Straw Hats and Shanks, as well as a bunch of image boards. However, most of the content featured in the new teaser was unveiled when the One Piece remake was first announced at Jump Festa back in December 2023.

Save for Shanks, the character designs for the Straw Hats were also revealed back in August 2024 at One Piece Day '24, with Usopp's remake design even stirring up a bit of controversy at the time. In all, including the character design chart for Shanks, the new teaser features perhaps three new concept art images.

What makes the situation all the more disappointing is that, after all this time, Netflix and Wit Studio have yet to unveil an actual good look at the remake outside of concept art, which does not reflect what the final product will look like. There's no doubt Wit Studio will do a good job, and while fans are content with letting them take their time and perfect the remake, perhaps in this situation it would have been better to put a hold on the teaser until the remake actually had something new to show.

One Piece's Remake Is Heavily Lagging Behind

Ironically, even One Piece's anime has been doing a better job of showing fans what a modern remake could look like lately, with Episode 1156 featuring a remaster of bits of the Little Garden as the anime heads into the Elbaph Arc. No doubt, the remake aims to fix many issues, from animation quality, to pacing and even censorship. But at this point, the project is heavily lagging behind in comparison to One Piece's other releases, and it's a mystery why.

Wit Studio has been very tight-lipped on the project as well, with the last update on production coming from when the studio's CEO, George Wada, was asked about the remake at Anime Expo 2025. At the time. Wada simply said, “Next year we’ll see you.” But of course, a year has come and gone, and One Piece's remake has yet to share anything of substance, much less a release window, and it's unclear how long it will take for the remake to see the light of day.
