It's been a huge year so far for indie games on Steam, and it's safe to say that many newly released projects from small-time developers wouldn't be nearly as successful without the community-friendly platform as a resource to get their games out there. Steam gives indie developers massive exposure, and also often lets players try out lesser known titles for free by way of the free demo feature.

If you haven't had a chance to check it out yet, Hermit and Pig is an incredible new indie game from indie developer Heavy Lunch Studio LLC that features "timed turn-based combat" and an extremely unique premise. Players take on the role of Hermit, an old man living alone enjoying the quiet life in the woods with his sidekick pig, "until the two are abruptly pulled into a corporate conspiracy."

Hermit and Pig currently has 100% positive reviews on Steam, and is described as a turn-based, story-rich RPG with a free demo available to play now. It features a "dialogue as battle" mechanic where conversations function as combat, where players can "say the wrong thing and take real cringe damage [and] surviving awkward exchanges allows you to grow stronger and level up."

The game has a dynamic foraging and exploration setup, with "nearly 40 types of fungi to heal, cure status effects, and gain the edge in combat," and your companion "Pig can sniff out enemy weaknesses in battle or truffles that double as revival items and currency."

Further, there's an interesting and unique progression system, where leveling up "grants a trinket point" and players can "equip trinkets to customize your battle style. You only have so many points, so every choice matters."

Aside from the 10/10 user score on Steam, the game has an 87 on Metacritic and can also be completed in a relatively short timeframe, ranging anywhere from 6–10 hours depending on playstyle. It's well worth trying out for free on Steam, and the demo will give you a good sense of what's in store if and when you purchase the full game, which is available for just around $15 USD. Hermit and Pig is easily one of the best indie games of the year so far, so don't sleep on it if you're a fan of classic RPGs.
