Lee D’Amato is a writer born, raised, and based in Queens, New York. With collective thousands of hours in games like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Elden Ring, and The Legend of Zelda, he's now writes game features, guides, and reviews for Screen Rant, but has covered a wide range of topics, including ancient history, affordable travel, and overall health.
A new collection of Nintendo console games you may never have heard of is coming soon. Between remakes like the upcoming Ocarina of Time and re-releases via the Nintendo Switch Online virtual console, Nintendo has undertaken numerous efforts to preserve its history. Now, publisher Edia is taking up the mantle with a new compliation of SNES games, coming to Switch and Switch 2 later this year.
The collection centers on a publisher that's had little to no presence in the United States. But given the revival of their material in this new compilation, there may finally be hope for an official English translation of these underappreciated classics.
Super Yanoman Collection, slated for launch on Switch, PC, PS4, and PS5 on December 10, is a compilation of three SNES games originally released by Japanese publisher Yanoman (via Comicbook.com). It includes the 1992 turn-based RPG Song Master, the 1993 action RPG Trinea, and the 1994 strategy RPG Feda: The Emblem of Justice, none of which have ever been released outside of Japan.
While there's little English-language information on any of these games, some of them do have interesting mechanics that seem pretty pivotal to gaming history. The decidedly Fire Emblem-inspired Feda included an early version of an alignment system: depending on how you resolve battles, you'll tip the scales further towards the "good" or "evil" side. The side you're on determines which characters you recruit a la Fallout, Baldur's Gate, et cetera.
Song Master, meanwhile, takes place in a world where music is equivalent to magic, which, while not unheard of, is always a fun bit of lore. Unfortunately, it seems like this was mostly just a bit of flavor, and that the musical spells you cast barely impact the game's mechanics.
You can see a bit of their gameplay above, including the rather sluggish-looking action combat of Trinea. Hard to judge a book by its cover, but the game undeniably had a great art style, though, with the impact of '90s fantasy anime really shining through. A fan translation is currently in progress for this one.
Song Master also got a partial English fan translation, and Feda a complete one. Nor will they be available in the West once the new collection comes out; at least for the time being, this is a Japan-only release. Here's hoping their modern port in the Super Yanoman Collection sparks more interest in translating these Nintendo console classics.
