Onimusha Sells 1 million in a Day as Capcom Vows to 'Re-activate' More Old Series

After a 20-year hiatus, the historical action game is yet another Capcom hit

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is yet another hit for Capcom. The first new mainline title in the historical action series in 20 years, Way of the Sword sold over 1 million copies on its first day of release, the developer/publisher announced Monday.

The successful launch continues Capcom's remarkable run in 2026, which began with Resident Evil Requiem (over 8 million copies sold), and continued with original sci-fi action game Pragmata (2.5 million copies), as well as Monster Hunter Stories 3. All four games have found broad critical acclaim, with Metacritic ratings of 85 or higher.

It's not over yet; on Oct. 9, Capcom will release the Dark Arisen expansion for Dragon's Dogma 2 alongside a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game. (Day one Switch 2 versions of all games have been another notable feature of Capcom's hot 2026.)

Capcom also noted its intention to resurrect more of its older series to fill out its stable alongside massive franchises Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Street Fighter. "In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently," the publisher said in a press release. "The company is working to further maximize corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, including this title."

Next up in this initiative is Mega Man; the retro action-platformer series will return in 2027 with Dual Override. Fans have been clamoring for new Dino Crisis and Breath of Fire games for even longer than they've been waiting for a return to Onimusha. Now might be their time?
