The company also raised its full-year adjusted earnings outlook as it continued a multiyear business overhaul.
Payment Growth Lifts PayPal Revenue
PayPal processed $487.1 billion in total payment volume during the quarter, up 6% from last year. On a currency-neutral basis, the increase reached 7%, reflecting additional activity across its payment network. The company also handled 6.8 billion payment transactions, representing 7% annual growth.
Transaction counts also grew 7% after excluding payment service provider activity, according to the quarterly figures. Meanwhile, transactions per active account reached 60.8 over the trailing 12 months, a 6% increase. That measure also climbed 6% when PayPal excluded unbranded card processing activity.
PayPal ended September with 440 million active accounts, up 0.6% from a year earlier. The account base increased by 1.6 million sequentially, representing 0.4% growth from the previous quarter. Higher payment activity helped lift quarterly revenue 2% to $8.58 billion, despite slower account growth.
Adjusted Earnings Improve as GAAP Profit Falls
Transaction margin dollars rose 2% to $3.95 billion, supported by growth across the business. Excluding interest on customer balances, that measure climbed 3% to $3.66 billion. The stronger increase excluding interest highlighted growth beyond income earned on customer funds.
GAAP operating income fell 8% to $1.40 billion, while the GAAP margin narrowed to 16.3%. By comparison, non-GAAP operating income increased 3% to $1.61 billion. The adjusted operating margin reached 18.8%, gaining 16 basis points from the prior year.
GAAP net income declined 14% to $1.07 billion, while diluted GAAP earnings slipped 4% to $1.25. However, adjusted earnings per share increased 8% to $1.45, even as adjusted net income declined 3%. Operating cash flow dropped 19% to $1.59 billion, and free cash flow decreased 17% to $1.43 billion.
PayPal Announces $1.5 Billion Buybacks and Cash Dividend
PayPal repurchased approximately 28 million shares for $1.5 billion during the third quarter. Over the preceding 12 months, the company spent $6.0 billion buying back roughly 117 million shares. Those purchases formed a major part of PayPal’s capital returns to shareholders.
Additionally, PayPal declared a $0.14 cash dividend per common share, with payment scheduled for December 24. PayPal set December 4 as the record date for that payment. The cash payment broadens shareholder returns beyond the company’s share repurchases.
PayPal finished September with $15.1 billion in cash, equivalents, and investments, against $13.5 billion in debt. Adjusted free cash flow reached $2.05 billion, down 10%, after excluding timing effects from buy now, pay later receivables. Management also raised full-year forecasts for adjusted transaction margin dollars and earnings per share.
