Pedri benched for World Cup final as Spain picks experience over flair

One of the best young midfielders on the planet will be watching from the bench when Spain faces Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final. The peculiar irony of the Instagram post

Earlier in the tournament, Pedri posted on Instagram what appeared to be a prediction of the final’s date: “19 07 26.” The post generated significant buzz among fans, widely interpreted as a confident, almost prophetic declaration that Spain would be playing on July 19.

Spain is indeed playing on July 19. Pedri just will not be starting.

Pedri is 23 years old. Being benched for three consecutive knockout matches at a World Cup, including the final, is not a small thing for a player’s confidence or his standing within the squad’s hierarchy.
