Pendle posts first TVL gain in a year as real-world assets take over

Total value locked rose 43% in Q3 to $1.16 billion even as PENDLE token incentives were cut by roughly 58%

Pendle just had the kind of quarter most DeFi protocols only see in slide decks. Total value locked rose 43% quarter-over-quarter to $1.16 billion by September 30, according to the yield-trading protocol’s Q3 2026 performance update.

The twist is how it got there. Pendle cut its PENDLE token incentives by approximately 58% and still grew.

Real-world assets carried the quarter

The driver was real-world asset (RWA) markets. Pendle’s Q3 report says these markets reached 82% of TVL by quarter’s end.

Tokenized dollars backed by RWAs added $395 million during the quarter and finished at $949 million.

The concentration is even sharper at the top. RWA-backed tokenized dollars accounted for 85% of Pendle’s top 50 markets.

Emerging RWA issuers such as re.xyz and Agora posted strong growth, taking ground once held by dominant assets like Ethena.

Collateral, buybacks and a revenue dip

Pendle’s Principal Tokens, or PTs, also gained traction elsewhere in DeFi. Lenders more than doubled their acceptance of PTs as collateral, reaching about $497 million.

That growth came from PT-reUSD listings on Morpho and new integrations on Aave.

On the tokenomics side, Pendle leaned harder on buybacks. The protocol repurchased 3.2 tokens for every one it distributed in incentives, up from 1.6 in Q2.

Stakers are the main beneficiaries of that shift. Pendle directs 80% of retained fees toward these buybacks.

Not every line moved up. V2 revenue fell to $2 million as trading fees declined, though the update noted improved efficiency in fees collected from yield tokens.

A rebound from a two-year low

Context makes the Q3 number look better. Pendle’s TVL had fallen to a two-year low of $812 million on June 30.

The Q3 increase was the protocol’s first quarterly gain since September 2025.

What this means for Pendle and PENDLE holders

The immediate test arrives in Q4. Approximately $1.06 billion, or about 91% of TVL as of September 30, is set to mature by December 17. That includes $236 million from re.xyz due on December 10.

For PENDLE holders, the buyback ratio is the number to track. Repurchasing 3.2 tokens per token emitted means buybacks are outpacing new supply from incentives, at least for now. That ratio could weaken, however, if fee income keeps sliding the way V2 revenue did this quarter, since buybacks are funded from retained fees.

The expanding role of PTs as collateral on Morpho and Aave could help with retention. If holders are using PTs as borrowing collateral, they have a reason to roll into new maturities rather than simply cash out.
