Prime Video's Scarpetta is officially looking ahead to 2027 for its second season, giving fans of the Patricia Cornwell adaptation something to look forward to in the new year.
As one of the streaming platform's 2026 releases, Prime Video's 8-part crime thriller hit the air with its first season in early 2026. Featuring Nicole Kidman as Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a forensic pathologist embroiled in a sprawling mystery that turns personal, the series was picked up for two seasons ahead of its initial premiere. While Scarpetta season 1 took some time to find its footing, the second season of the Prime Video series appears to be on track for another wide release, with fans hoping to see more from Kidman and co-star Jamie Lee Curtis, who plays Kay's sister Dorothy on screen.
During the Blumfest panel at New York Comic Con, at which Screen Rant's Jordan Williams was in attendance, it was announced that Scarpetta season 2's premiere was coming sooner than expected, with the series eyeing a 2027 release. With Blum sharing that Scarpetta season 2 was "on the TV front in 2027," the release window is wide, but will likely shake out to be similar to the first season's schedule. The inaugural season of Scarpetta was released in March 2026, which means it's likely that the upcoming season will be in a similar boat.
MovieStillsDBScarpetta's first season had to do a fair bit of heavy lifting to establish Kay and the world around her, especially with the Cornwell novels having spanned throughout the last 30 years. With Scarpetta season 1 choosing to adapt both the first novel in the series, 1990's Post-Mortem, and one of the more present day novels, 2021's Autopsy, the disconnect between the works translated into a sometimes messy dual-timeline story that had a tougher time translating on screen than anticipated. Thankfully, the series benefited from the star power behind its cast, which included Kidman, Lee Curtis, Bobby Carnavale, and Ariana DeBose.
With Scarpetta season 2 adapting two novels again, this time the series is choosing the fourth and fifth books in the series, 1993's Cruel and Unusual and 1994's The Body Farm. While the series will be taking a dual-timeline approach again, the two stories being told are more closely tied in the canon of the novels, which could help to bridge the gap in the narrative. The series will continue to utilize younger versions of the characters in the second season, which leaves threads of the past mixed in with the present-day storyline in a fascinating way. With Scarpetta blurring the lines between traditional procedural and family drama, the show's return will be exciting for Prime Video in 2027.
