Prime Video's New Fantasy Thriller Hits Major Filming Milestone For Comic Series' First Adaptation
Prime Video’s highly anticipated adaptation of Sex Criminals has a new filming update.
In January 2026, Prime Video officially ordered the eight-episode series adaptation of Sex Criminals, based on Matt Fraction’s acclaimed comic book series. Before Prime Video picked it up, Universal Television originally tried to adapt the popular graphic novel through a 2015 deal Fraction signed. However, it ultimately got stuck in development hell. More than a decade later, Sex Criminals is finally heading to television, as filming began in late summer.
Through an Instagram story, series co-creator Emily V. Gordon has shared a new behind-the-scenes photo from the set of Sex Criminals, confirming that production has officially wrapped on the upcoming Prime Video show. The set photo shows lead stars Imogen Poots and John Reynolds filming their final scene as Suze and Jon inside a green car, with Reynolds behind the wheel and Poots in the passenger seat. The Marvels director Nia DaCosta directed the first two episodes of the show.
Sex Criminals follows Suze, a woman who has an extraordinary ability to stop time whenever she has sex. The story begins when she meets someone with the same strange gift, Reynolds’ Jon. Together, they decide to put their unique power to good use by robbing banks. Fraction wrote the original R-rated comic book series, and Chip Zdarsky illustrated it. Image Comics published it from September 2013 to October 2020, over 31 issues and one special.
The Sex Criminals show is created by Gordon, actor and her husband Kumail Nanjiani, and Tze Chun, who serve as showrunners and series creators. Joining Poots and Reynolds are BD Wong as Oliver, Pamela Adlon as Bev, Jasper Keen as Ian, Ashleigh Cummings as Charlene, and Nanjiani also stars as Dane. Gordon and Nanjiani, who received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay for their work on 2017's The Big Sick, also serve as executive producers through their Winter Coat Films banner, along with Dani Gorin (LuckyChap), Tze Chun, and DaCosta. LuckyChap's Louie Hayes has also signed on to produce.
Since scoring their first Academy Award nomination in 2018, Gordon and Kumail followed up the critical success of The Big Sick with two shows, such as Apple TV’s anthology series Little America and Hulu’s true-crime miniseries Welcome to Chippendales. The Eternals star last appeared in See You When I See You, The Breadwinner, and The Wrong Girls, all of which debuted this year.
In 2027, Nanjiani will star opposite Glen Powell in the upcoming comedy film The Comeback King. He is also attached to appear in the new horror movie Green Bank, led by Tatiana Maslany.
As of now, the release date for Prime Video’s TV adaptation of Sex Criminals hasn’t been announced yet. Meanwhile, the original comic book series is still available for purchase at local comic book stores and on Kindle.
